‘We DEMAND a Referendum’ (Always!)

Members of the National Liberal Party attended the recent launch of the new group ‘We demand a referendum’ in London. The group, largely the brainchild of hard-working Midland’s MEP Nikki Sinclaire, has been formed for one reason only, namely to DEMAND an in/out referendum on the EU.

Treated to an excellent array of speakers, the audience were reminded that all the main Westminster parties, the ‘gang of three’, had at one time or another promised the people an opportunity to vote on a matter of great constitutional importance. Yet, after many years, we are no nearer to a vote. An explanatory speech by Nikki Sinclaire was followed by a highly professional business expose of the EU by ‘Apprentice’ star Katie Hopkins, and then followed by an inspirational one by leader of the Christian party George Hargreaves. The latter explained that his first political involvement was with Sir James Goldsmith’s short-lived Referendum Party in the 1990’s. The new group see themselves very much a part of that legacy. They certainly don’t see themselves as Xenophobes.

The appearance of ex-UKIP leader Roger Knapman also highlights a growing number of euro-sceptics who believe that UKIP has had its day and is no longer fit for purpose. Indeed, David Davies MP’s latest description of them as ”an alternative Conservative party”, reaffirms its limited constituency. In contrast ‘We demand a Referendum’ believe they can reach out to all social classes and voters with their simple demand.

They are a single-issue and single election party, in that if no referendum is agreed by the beginning of 2014 they will stand candidates in all UK regions in that years European elections.

The NLP demands referendums, always!

As National Liberals we believe that the use of referendums (and Initiatives) should be constitutionally a fixed element and indeed major part of our political system (similar to Switzerland). Our relationship with the EU is a perfect reason for a referendum. Whilst we would, theoretically, prefer the UK to attempt a renegotiation of our relationship from a position of strength whilst the Eurozone is in crisis, a vote on its outcome (if any) and staying in or out is a must!

The National Liberal Party does expect to take an exciting part in those elections (tba) but as believers in political cooperation we wish the new group well in their endeavours and look forward to working together with all who wish to empower our citizens in the best interests in the country and our people.

Magna Carta Comment – NLTU

As part of a series of articles from the various groups that we host on our Liberty Wall, the following is from the Chairman of the National Liberal Trade Unionists, Glen Nicklasson:

Are we heading back to a by-gone age where employer’s had ‘absolute power’ over their employee’s. The most extreme version of this is the obscene slave-trade of previous centuries. Now, I’m not implying that the present government is trying to re-introduce slavery, but they certainly are trying to erode workers rights by increasing the period of time before you can claim unfair dismissal from 1 to 2 years, plus proposing that sacked employee’s provide a financial bond before applying to a tribunal. Well connected friends of theirs would like to see the offence of ‘unfair dismissal’ abolished all together!

Well, what has this got to do with Magna Carta you may ask? Well the same principle applies, King John of England, who was a corrupt, absolute monarch, angered all those under his influence by exercising that ‘absolute power’. The ‘absolute power’ was resisted by the barons under him and they eventually persuaded King John to adopt the Magna Carta that acknowledged that their rights should not be abused. Equally, as a Trade Unionist I would urge you all to resist moves to recreate an employer’s ‘absolute power’ and to mark Magna Carta Day on Friday by signing the petition to Protect Employment Rights by signing the petition at http://www.gopetition.com/petition/43004.html.

National Liberal Party – Tales from the Liberty Wall – 4WR

4WR Supporters Bulletin

AS WE’VE noted previously, a National Liberal Party meeting unveiled plans for a new section on the party website to be known as the ‘Liberty Wall’, hosting pages and links to campaigning groups sponsored or supported by the party.” (See our article Steering Committee meets to plan strategy! of 22/04/2012 for full details of the meeting.)

To date, those on the Liberty Wall include the St. George’s Committee, Nations without States, English Green, National Liberal Trade Unionists and Fourth World Review. No doubt more will follow in due course.

However, as well as promoting various groups and causes on the Liberty Wall, the NLP also wants to feature news, views and bulletins from those groups. Also – and in accordance with our well-known Libertarian stance – we’d be happy to host debates as well.

This means that the Liberty Wall will become a vital ‘two way street’ in terms of information, policy and debate. We’d therefore encourage each and every group to send the NLP as many articles as possible so that we can all help to build the Liberty Wall!

With this in mind, we’ve reproduced a 4WR Supporters Bulletin, which, we understand, is being distributed at the moment. It provides both an update concerning the next issue of 4WR (issue 154) and an idea of future developments, including promoting 4WR’s idea of ‘Small is Beautiful!’ via dozens – if not hundreds of – local newsletters.”

As soon as we get any more information from 4WR – or from any of the other groups on the Liberty Wall – we’ll let you know. In the meantime, here’s the (above mentioned) 4WR Supporters Bulletin:

4WR Supporters Bulletin – May 2012

Dear 4WR Supporter –

The next issue of Fourth World Review should be out towards the end of this month.

Issue 154 of 4WR will consist of two major interviews. Both were conducted by Wayne John Sturgeon. Those interviewed are Henry Law of the Land Value Taxation Campaign and Dr. Vernon Coleman, the well-known anti-EU activist and author.

One major confirmed article is Panjaab – A Forgotten Palestine! A Small Nation Versus Indian Superstate by Jagdeesh Singh. On a similar theme, 4WRs new series, Raising a Voice for Small Nations, will also include updates from Sri Lanka and Sicily.

I have written an editorial on ‘Advertising’ and an article entitled Political Progress. This notes:

“At heart we are engaged in a battle between the power of morality and that of money. We can only win by making the local community, the place where personal relationships can prevail over impersonal mass power relationships, a significant core of decision-making power.”

We’ve also got four book reviews plus several other items of interest. Also look out for the cover of this issue of 4WR. I can guarantee that it’ll be a case of ‘once seen, never forgotten!’

Once issue 154 is ready we’ll let you know. Until then, why not treat a friend, family member or work mate to a FREE pdf copy of the last issue of 4WR? Simply send their e-mail address to me at papworthjohn@yahoo.co.uk and I’ll send them a copy of issue 153.

I can also reveal that 4WR now has a Facebook page. It can be used for 4WR-related announcements and debates. Why now check it out? If you’re on Facebook, simply type in Fourth World Review in the ‘Search’ bar at the top of your home page.

John Papworth, Founder, Fourth World Review.

PS: Do you have (or do you know anyone who has) experience of fund-raising? The current Editorial Board wish to promote 4WR’s idea of ‘Small is Beautiful!’ via dozens – if not hundreds of – local newsletters. We are looking for people who are willing to help with the financing, writing, production and distribution of these newsletters. Please get in touch as soon as possible if you fit the bill!

Fourth World Review

The Fourth World Review is a long standing magazine (50 years+) dedicated to fighting ‘gigantism’ everywhere! It believes the answer to our ills is to adopt Schumacher’s philosophy of ‘small is beautiful’. Its founding editor John Papworth is an inspiration. Over ninety years old and still promoting a worldview that values the individual amongst the mass, the ‘little man’ against the big machines, and the small business against Corporate greed. A new way of thinking that has been around a long time! We are delighted to welcome the 4WR to our Liberty Wall. If you would like to understanding about the ‘Fourth World’ or simply read a PDF copy of the last issue of the magazine click onto the logo.

FOR THE ‘LITTLE MAN’ AGAINST THE RETAIL GIANT!
The National Liberal Party supports the value of the small shopkeeper, both as an independent owner and as part of the ‘glue’ that helps cement a vibrant community. It is not a co-incidence that the decline of the shopkeeper has gone hand in hand with the decline (in many areas) of ‘Community Spirit’. Anything that protects those that remain is a good thing.
.
The Tescoploy Team i.e. those who have been exposing what ‘dirty tricks’ one of our largest supermarkets have been up to are running a campaign in support of introducing a Supermarket watchdog to protect the consumer and their smaller suppliers. See below and support!:

Dear Friends,

Take action

As you know we have campaigned long and hard for a new supermarket watchdog. We are hoping that the Bill (to introduce the watchdog) will be announced in the Queen’s Speech on Tuesday 9th May, and that it will be read in the next session of Parliament.

Please take this quick on-line action to ask your MP to write to The Rt Hon Dr Vince Cable MP – the Minister responsible – calling for:

  • a Bill introducing a supermarket watchdog to be included in the next Queen’s Speech.
  • powers for the watchdog to fine supermarkets and launch investigations based on credible information from third parties (e.g. trade associations, unions and charities).

Best wishes,

The Tescopoly Team

TIME TO PROMOTE LIBERTY & NATION!

The National Liberal Party represents those of us who believe that our individual rights and our collective (community and nation) needs, require protection.
Those who are happy to let the state take all decisions on our behalf (socialists) or would leave everything to the survival of the fittest (conservatives), jockey for power in their parties and the country. We instead, would let the people (always) decide upon their future via Referendums.

We believe that the average voter values their individual freedoms and privacy from being invaded by the state (or private corporations). You can sign our petition against the surveillance society at http://www.gopetition.com/petitions/say-no-to-the-surveillance-society.html.

We believe they value their culture and nationhood. We have nothing to fear from Referendums but the establishment has everything to fear!
Sadly, nothing will change without struggle and the establishment politicians will not surrender their positions, power (and expenses!) easily. Only by campaigning and/or supporting those that are will anything change.

To help us develop, to help us campaign for change we urge all of you to join today. Please go to the website at http://nationalliberal.org/?page_id=727
