National Liberal Debate 17 – EU Referendum 2017: What Will Be The Dominant Issues?

EU Referendum 2017 - What will be the dominant issues?

THE MANY problems faced by Britain – whether economic or social – are not going to be solved by screaming and shouting. Thus, the National Liberal Party is not interested in ‘hitting the headlines’ using the tired formula of macho–posturing and gesture politics. These problems will only be overcome by a combination of careful thought and action.

This means that we favour informed and reasoned debate. Here we concentrate on arguments, points of view and facts. We are not interested in personalities, prejudice or promoting self-interest.

The National Liberal Party seeks to build an organisation that encourages free speech and debate. To do this, we also attempt to take into consideration as many views as is possible in open debate. Thus, members and supporters are always encouraged to have their say.

We’re also interested in encouraging people to develop their debating skills. That’s why the NLP has introduced a new series of articles called Have Your Say! Whilst each subject will be announced on this web-site, they’ll be conducted in full on the National Liberals Facebook site, which can be found here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/52739504313/

Before we start this debate we’d like to remind folks of our ground rules:

•  First of all, say what you think – but think what you say.

•  Secondly, just debate the issue(s) raised. There should be no personal attacks.

•  As previously noted, we’re simply not interested in personalities.

•  Please note that we may ask selected members and supporters to play ‘devil’s advocate’. Hopefully, this’ll help sharpen the debating skills of all involved!

•  Finally, it should be remembered that all of the views expressed in Have Your Say! are personal and should not be taken to be the official view of the NLP itself.

Our last debate looked at Britain’s in-out EU referendum due to be held in 2017.  We were particularly interested in the mechanics of the referendum – what form would it take, would there be official ‘Yes’ and ‘No’ camps, what public money would be alloted to them, access to the media and so on.

We also touched on the way vested interests – big business, the financial sector, other EU states and even Washington – could attempt to influence the vote.

At the moment, the NLP has established a Facebook site – EU Referendum: In or out? which can be found here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1691709351061421/ – and is debating its position.  The outcome is vital, for as the site notes of the forthcoming referendum:

For at least four, probably longer, months it will dominate British politics. The actual vote will be a defining moment in the country’s history.  Any political party worth its name will have a view and is likely to campaign on one side or the other.  The National Liberal Party is using this group to help its ruling National Council decide upon which side of the fence it will fall.”

Once the Facebook debate has been concluded, a future National Liberal debate will look specifically at our attitude to the EU and what alternatives are available to Britain.

However, for this debate our question is simple: EU Referendum 2017 – What will be the dominant issues?

Upkar Says … If You Live In The London Boroughs of Hounslow, Islington, Kensington & Chelsea, and Kingston upon Thames … SHOP LOCAL!
.
UPKAR SINGH RAI is the National Liberal Party’s prospective candidate for Mayor of London.  Running on a ‘Quality of Life’ ticket, Upkar is determined to make support for small shops, small businesses and the self-employed a cornerstone of his campaign.

Indeed, he has already pledged financially support this vital community and economic sector.  Towards the end of September he stated:

I promise that, if elected as Mayor of London, I will only take the average wage of a skilled worker. This wage will be independently verified by the TUC. The rest of my salary will go towards charities and to what I would term ‘good causes’.  I would also only claim legitimate expenses, the rest again going to helping others.”

In particular, I view supporting small shops, local businesses and the self-employed as a ‘good cause.’  Therefore, I will direct a portion of any excess salary and expenses towards efforts which serve to promote, protect and preserve small shops, local businesses and the self-employed.  I regard all of these as vital, core elements of both London’s social fabric and economy.”

Upkar believes that small shops, local businesses and the self-employed are a vital element of London’s economy.  They are vital to the local community by providing good choice, reasonable prices and excellent customer services. They are the ‘glue’ that binds various communities together.

In addition to his pledge of financial support, Upkar will support the following measures to promote, protect and preserve small shops, local businesses and the self-employed:

•  PROMOTE a policy of localism for London – as opposed to globalism.  Localism supports the local production and consumption of goods.  It puts the local economy, community and environment first.  Small shops, local businesses and the self-employed are the corner stone of localism.

•  ENCOURAGE small shops, local businesses and the self-employed to start up by cutting local business rates.  Stop luring big business via low corporation taxes.  Also stop the growth of out-of-town superstores.

•  PUT pressure on the banks to issue interest-free loans.  If, say, a local shop owner gets a loan of £10,000 then they will only pay that amount back.  At the moment, banks create credit out of nothing and then charge interest on it!  This is immoral and is crippling those who want to promote the local economy.

•  BOOST the local economy by introducing local currencies, similar to the Brixton Pound.  Working alongside the Pound Sterling, local currencies encourage spending within the local community, especially with locally owned businesses.

•  HOST special days whereby shoppers are encouraged to keep a fiver – or even £1 – over from their ‘big shop’ and spend it locally.  Imagine the effect on the local economy if even 100 people spent just £1 in each and every local shop!

Help Upkar support your local shops, small businesses and the self-employed by simply liking this (and all previous London/Shop Local e-posters – see the links below) and share on social media.

If You Live Or Work In Wessex … SHOP LOCAL!
.
.
IT’S probably fair to say that Distributism is one of the main influences on National Liberal economic thought.  Distributism itself has been accurately described as the “widespread private ownership of housing and control of industry through owner-operated small businesses and worker-controlled co-operatives.”

With this in mind, it’s easy to understand why the NLP is such a passionate supporter of local shops, small businesses and the self-employed.

Regular vistors to this site will know this – for we’ve recently been heavily promoting local shopping in London.  This is just one part of our campaign to support Upkar Singh Rai, the NLPs prospective candidate for 2016 London Mayor.

However, it’s not just in London that we want to support local shops, small businesses and the self-employed.  We promote this idea throughout the whole of Britain.  For instance, the latest in our line of local shopping e-posters relates to Wessex.

Although Wessex isn’t a modern county, it has deep – and significant – cultural and national roots.  For as the Encyclopaedia Britannicahttp://www.britannica.com/place/Wessex-historical-kingdom – notes:

“Wessex, one of the kingdoms of Anglo-Saxon England, whose ruling dynasty eventually became kings of the whole country.  In its permanent nucleus, its land approximated that of the modern counties of Hampshire, Dorset, Wiltshire and Somerset.  At times its land extended north of the River Thames, and it eventually expanded westward to cover Devon and Cornwall.  The name Wessex is an elision of the Old English form of ‘West Saxon.’”

Those National Liberals who want to find out more about Wessex should check out the following sites:

Building The Isle Of Wight Voice

A KEY part of the National Liberal Party’s overall strategy is to build the infrastructure of an alternative mass media of news, information and entertainment (1).

To date, the NLP has launched several national, regional and local publications. Some have been e-publications whilst others have been hard copies. These include Liberty & Nation, Caledonian Voice, English Voice, Cuffley, Courier, Kent Voice, the Isle of Wight Voice and St. Andrews Voice.

In time, we aim to add to these publications – indeed, earlier this year Ulster Voice produced its first e-poster (2). We also hope to build a supporting infrastructure around each publication – including supporters and debating groups as well as Social Media sites like Facebook and Twitter. But building such an infrastructure is slow and detailed work.

Another area of support for our publications is the production of regular e-posters. Such e-posters are known as visual sound bites. In this age of the ‘micro-second media’ they represent a very useful way of viralling our message out.

Indeed, earlier this month the Isle of Wight Voice produced another e-poster (3) which noted that the island needed jobs and not cuts. An earlier e-poster (4) campaigned in support of the National Health Service.

With the island in mind, here we reproduce the main article from issue 1 of the Isle of Wight Voice – which was produced way back in April 2012. As far as we’re aware, there’s only been one review (5) of this issue. However, we’d like to hear from anyone who’d be willing to produce another review of it or who’d be able to produce articles for future issues.

Similarly, we want to hear from anyone who can suggest subjects for future IoWV e-posters. To submit your ideas, simply e-mail us natliberal@aol.com or look out for this article on the National Liberals facebook site https://www.facebook.com/groups/52739504313/?fref=nf and have your say in the comments section.

Island Unemployment Rates Are A DISGRACE!
.

Issue 1 of the Isle of Wight Voice is still available. To get hold of your FREE pdf copy, simple e-mail natliberal@aol.com today!

THE CON-DEM Government needs to do much more to solve the social and economic problems faced by Islanders. And youth unemployment in particular needs to be tackled.

.
That’s the view of Glen Maney – a full-time actor and comedian – who has extensive links on the island.
.
He said: “Nearly five per cent of those on the Island aged between 16 – 64 are unemployed. That’s higher than both the South Eastern regional average of 2.7% and the national average of 4%. It’s an absolute disgrace.”
.
And youth unemployment rates on the Island are even worse. Over 12% of 18-24 year olds here are out of work. That’s more than double the regional average, which stands at 5.4%. And it’s way above the national average of 8.1%.
.
The figures – provided by the Office for National Statistics – show that 3,964 Islanders were claiming Job Seekers Allowance (JSA) at the beginning of the year.
.
Mr. Maney continued: “It’s said that for every job available on the Island, there are around 16 people applying for it. Sadly, it’s a figure that you’d normally associate with deprived inner-city areas of London, Birmingham, Liverpool or Manchester.
.
Here we are in one of the most beautiful parts of England and we’re sitting on a social and economic time-bomb. If Islanders can’t find work, we’ll start facing the serious social problems associated with longterm unemployment.”
.
Glen, an ex-footballer and policeman and now a professional comedian and owner of a film company, lived in Shanklin and Wroxall for many years. His family is still on the Island.
.
Talking about the state of the economy, Glen – who will be standing for election here at the next General Election – said that he felt that there was plenty of money in the UK pot, but ordinary working families just don’t get a look in.
.
“Each year the super-rich avoid paying around £420 billion in tax. Three years ago, the government managed to find £45 billion to bail out the Royal Bank of Scotland. How much has our involvement in Iraq, Afghanistan and Libya cost us? How much did the MPs Expenses Scandal cost us? How much does it cost us to stay in the EU?”
.
He also pointed out that Britain’s former prime ministers – such as Maggie Thatcher and Tony Blair – can claim up to £500,000 a year each.
.
“Cameron and Clegg always say that there’s no money. Yet they can always find money to wage war in some far-flung corner of the world, fund the EU ‘gravy train’ and bail out the bankers and help the ‘fat cats’.
.
They need to clamp down on the super-rich and knock some of these payments on the head. The money saved should be put towards creating jobs for Islanders – especially the young!”

Upkar Says … If You Live In The London Boroughs of Haringey, Harrow, Havering and Hillingdon
.

WE COULD probably spend every hour of every day debating whether Britain is a true democracy. Whilst we acknowledge that we have a system of ‘one man one vote’ we know that there are many factors that decide the outcome of an election.  One of these factors is money.

As many of you will now know, the National Liberal Party hopes to stand Upkar Singh Rai for 2016 London Mayor.  Upkar will be standing on a ‘Quality of Life’ ticket – he believes that London is rapidly becoming un-sustainable in terms of physical size and population growth.  In contrast to the lunacy of unrestricted growth, Upkar believes that ‘Small is Beautiful!’  Central to his campaign is his – and the NLPs – support for local shops, small businesses and the self-employed.

However, democracy doesn’t come cheap in London!

Indeed, it costs £20,000 alone to get your name on the ballot box – and that’s before any leaflets, posters or other promotional material is printed and distributed!  However, getting our name on the ballot box will ensure that our message goes directly to all 3.5 million London households.

You can help us in two easy ways – by sponsoring or donating.

The NLP has set up two funds, a Sponsorship Fund (to pay the £20,000 deposit) and a Fighting Fund (for leaflets, posters and so on).

If you want to pledge (£100 plus) to the Sponsorship Fund please e-mail natliberal@aol.com

If you wish to donate to the Fighting Fund please go to http://nationalliberal.org/the-party-organisation/donate or transfer to the Bank of Scotland, NLP, 12-11-03, 06186181, or Cheques can be mailed to the National Liberal Party, PO Box 4217, Hornchurch, Essex RM12 4PJ.

Will you help Upkar to promote his ‘Quality of Life’ message?  Will you help him promote his sustainability message?  Will you help him promote his support for local shops, small businesses and the self-employed?  If your answer is yes, contact the National Liberal Party today!

• IF YOU live – or have any contacts – in the London Boroughs of Haringey, Harrow, Havering and Hillingdon, please ‘Like & Share’ this e-poster on Facebook or Tweet its link via Twitter.  Ask your family, friends, neighbours and workmates to do the same.  Please use any of the following Hashtags:
