Caledonian Voice Says … Put Scotland First!

.

.

HERE’S THE latest hard-hitting e-poster from Caledonian Voice – the Voice of the National Liberal Party in Scotland.

It’s the third in a series of e-posters which will look at different social and economic issues in Scotland. The first two e-posters can be found here:

• Caledonian Voice Says … Keep Scotland Out Of Foreign Wars! http://nationalliberal.org/caledonian-voice-says-keep-scotland-out-of-foreign-wars

• Caledonian Voice Says … Forget Vampires – The Banks Are The Real Bloodsuckers! http://nationalliberal.org/caledonian-voice-says-%e2%80%a6-forget-vampires-%e2%80%93-the-banks-are-the-real-bloodsuckers

Caledonian Voice recently spoke to a Glasgow-based NLP supporter, Andrew Hunter, about the new e-poster. He said:

“I dream of true Scottish freedom. But this must be within the context of what I would term the ‘Conferderate States of the British Isles.’

By true Scottish freedom, I mean freedom from the stifling centralism of the EU, freedom from Globalism, freedom from all forms of totalitarianism.

Scottish freedom also means that Scotland should be as self-sufficient and self-reliant as is possible. Instead of letting thousands of Scots rot on the dole, we should be building and growing as much as possible ourselves. How many jobs would a system of national preference create?

Scottish freedom also means that we have to stop the system whereby 97% of all money is created by private banks out of nothing and lent to the public at interest. A National Bank of Scotland will promote sustainable growth by spending – and not lending – interest-free credit into the economy.”

Caledonian Voice would like to add its voice to what Andrew says. We too support devolution (sometimes called Devo-Max here in Scotland) to its fullest extent.  That’s why we say that it’s time to Put Scotland First!

Upkar Says … If You Live In The London Boroughs of Enfield, Greenwich, Hackney and Hammersmith & Fulham … SHOP LOCAL!
.
.
BUYING LOCAL means that you are supporting your local economy! In fact several studies have demonstrated that when you buy from a locally-owned business as opposed to a chain store, significantly more of your money is used to buy from other local businesses and service providers.  This means that your money is going straight back into your own community and supporting even more local jobs.  It also means that you are buying locally-sourced products with none of the large carbon footprints of the goods that the large chain stores fly in from across the globe.

Why not buy what you want rather than what some slick marketing executive wants you to buy?  Small businesses select their goods based not on a ‘one size fits all’ national sales plan but on the needs of their local customers.  Indeed, it’s doubtful if the recent horsemeat scandal would have ever occurred if everyone bought from their local butchers – who, in turn, buy their beef and pork from farms that they know, using short supply chains and providing full traceability.

Did you know that small local businesses are the largest employer both nationwide and in our local communities?  They also give 250% more to charities than larger businesses.

Local shops and traders are mainly based in town centres and require comparatively little investment in infrastructure and make more efficient use of public services thus ensuring that your taxes are put to good use.  Think of all the upheaval and extra traffic that big store development brings!

The closure of local independent shops, businesses and traders would be catastrophic to any local community as it would force residents to travel further and limit their choice.  It could also result in the remaining suppliers, (in particular the main multinationals), inflating their prices.

That’s why Upkar Singh Rai says Support Local Shops, Businesses and the Self-Employed!

Building Liberty & Nation

EARLIER this year we published an article Building Our Media Infrastructure which noted that the National Liberal Party has several key strategies. Our article – http://nationalliberal.org/building-our-media-infrastructure – looked at one of these objectives: building the infrastructure of an alternative mass media of news, information and entertainment.

We know that all of our publications generate enthusiasm and a positive response. However, we want to build a much larger audience for our media – therefore, we announced that we’d be featuring the lead articles from each of our publications to date. The idea is that when these articles appear, NLP members and supporters would viral them out via social media.

We also stated that although the articles will be dated to some extent we’d appreciate any comments, observations or suggestions – good bad or indifferent.

Before St. George’s Day we kicked off with the lead article from issue 1 of English Voice the voice of the NLP in England (1). We followed that up with the lead article from issue 1 of Caledonian Voice – the voice of the NLP in Scotland. (2).

This time we’re publishing the lead article from issue 1 of Liberty & Nation – originally produced in October 2012. (Readers will note that L&N uses the phrase ‘Third Way.’ Here it is used here in a Scottish political context in that it refers to a position that goes beyond independence and unionism. Please note that that there are no official connections between the NLP or L&N and groups bearing a similar name.)

We’re not aware of any reviews of issue 1 of L&N, so we’d like to hear from any folks who’d be willing to produce a review of it or who’d be able to produce articles for future issues.

Similarly, we want to hear from anyone who can suggest subjects for future L&N e-posters. To date, we’ve produced this one which looks at ‘bread and butter’ issues like jobs and housing:

http://nationalliberal.org/liberty-nation-says-fight-for-decent-jobs-housing-education-and-health-care

With this in mind what else should L&N highlight?

Federalism For Britain!

Issue 1 of Liberty & Nation is still available. To get hold of your FREE pdf copy, simply e-mail natliberal@aol.com today.

THE FORTHCOMING Scottish Constitutional Referendum – currently scheduled for Autumn 2014 – will primarily determine Scotland’s future. However, the result will also have a direct effect on the make-up of the rest of the UK. It may also cause us to re-examine national relationships within the British Isles – and possibly Europe as well.

At the moment, much of the debate concerning the Scottish referendum seems to revolve around what choices will be offered to the electorate. Initially, it appeared that these choices would be limited to maintaining the status quo (i.e. retaining the union) or independence. However, the call for some form of maximum devolution (more commonly known as ‘Devo-Max’) to appear on the ballot paper appears to be growing.

DEVO-MAX

For those who don’t know, Devo-Max would allow for the fullest devolution of powers to the Scottish Parliament with only the minimum of ‘UK matters’ such as defence and foreign affairs remaining in the hands of the Westminster Government. In short, Devo-Max could be regarded as a ‘Third Way’ beyond Independence and unionism.

The National Liberal Party – NLP – supports the idea of having Devo-Max included as one of the choices offered to the electorate in the Scottish Referendum. We’d also rather have a Preferendum as well, but that’s another story altogether! However, as well as campaigning for Devo-Max to be included on any ballot paper, the NLP supports the idea of Devo-Max for Scotland.

FEDERALISM

But our support for the idea of Devo-Max doesn’t just begin and end in Scotland. In fact, we believe in federalism for the whole of Britain! This means that all of the home nations should have their own parliament. This will leave Westminster to act solely as a UK-wide ‘inter-national’ parliament.

The NLP believes that this is also the only way of addressing English grievances over the West Lothian question (where Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish MPs at Westminster can vote on policies that only affect England but English MPs can’t vote in the Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish devolved governments) and the Barnett Formula (which ensures that England gets a raw deal when it comes to the money spent on essential public services.) Devo-Max will give England its own parliament.

Our form of Devo-Max will also recognise the ethnic and cultural differences between the peoples and nations of Britain. It’ll also honour the similarities – for instance our shared history, heritage and way of life.

That’s why the National Liberal Party says Federalism For Britain!

Do You Fit The Bill? Some Thoughts On Recruitment – Part 1
.
THE NATIONAL LIBERAL PARTY is looking for people – but just not anyone!

We’re looking for really different people – people who don’t just ‘go with the flow’ just because what’s on offer is the popular or ‘trendy’ option.  We looking for people who are prepared to stand up for what is right.  We’re looking for people who are prepared to stand up for what is true.  We’re looking for people who are interested in standing up for freedom and justice.

Above all, we’re looking for people who will look at any given situation – from all positions – and then come up with an answer.

This means that we favour informed and reasoned debate. Here we concentrate on arguments, points of view and facts. We are not interested in personalities, prejudice or promoting self-interest.

So who are we interested in attracting?

We’re looking for people who are willing to become active – to do things.  Those who’re are only interested in talking need not apply! We’re looking for very special individuls.

We’re looking for folks who can write, edit and translate.  We’re looking for people who’re good at fundraising.  We’re also looking for people with artistic skills and cultural backgrounds.  Can you produce artwork?  Maybe you’re excellent at photoshop and can help produce our ever expanding range of e-posters.  We’re also looking for really good photographers.  We’re also very interested in really expanding our presence on YouTube.  Can you help?

As we’ve mentioned before, one of the NLP’s key objectives is to build the infrastructure of an alternative mass media of news, information and entertainment.  We’re looking for the activists to help us do this.

If you think that you fit the bill, get in touch today!  Simply e-mail the NLP at natliberal@aol.com

Upkar Says … If You Live In The London Boroughs of Bromley, Camden, Croydon and Ealing … SHOP LOCAL!
.

.
UPKAR SINGH RAI is the National Liberal Party’s prospective candidate for London Mayor.  For the election – scheduled for 5 May 2016 – he will be campaigning on a ‘Quality of Life’ ticket.

He has also declared that, if elected, he would represent the people of London – and not the political or financial establishment.

With this in mind, he will only take a portion of the salary of the Mayor of London.  It currently stands at £143,911 per year.

Upkar said:

I promise that, if elected as Mayor of London, I will only take the average wage of a skilled worker. This wage will be independently verified by the TUC. The rest of my salary will go towards charities and to what I would term ‘good causes’.  I would also only claim legitimate expenses, the rest again going to helping others.

I view supporting small shops, local businesses and the self-employed as a ‘good cause.’  Therefore, I will direct a portion of any excess salary and expenses towards efforts which serve to promote, protect and preserve small shops, local businesses and the self-employed.  I regard all of these as vital, core elements of both London’s social fabric and economy.”

But before Upkar can even stand a chance of supporting small shops, local businesses and the self-employed we need to raise serious money.
Indeed, it costs £20,000 alone to get your name on the ballot box – democracy doesn’t come cheap in London!  After that there are all the normal election expenses associated with promoting a candidate.

Are you interested in supporting London’s small independent traders?  Are you willing to donate towards our election campaign?  If so, simply e-mail e-mail natliberal@aol.com today!

To stand however he needs at least £20k. We believe however that if 100 supporters give £100 each he will be well on the way to raising that money.
