UPKAR SINGH RAI is the National Liberal Party’s prospective candidate for Mayor of London. Running on a ‘Quality of Life’ ticket, Upkar is determined to make support for small shops, small businesses and the self-employed a cornerstone of his campaign.
Indeed, he has already pledged financially support this vital community and economic sector. Towards the end of September he stated:
“I promise that, if elected as Mayor of London, I will only take the average wage of a skilled worker. This wage will be independently verified by the TUC. The rest of my salary will go towards charities and to what I would term ‘good causes’. I would also only claim legitimate expenses, the rest again going to helping others.”
In particular, I view supporting small shops, local businesses and the self-employed as a ‘good cause.’ Therefore, I will direct a portion of any excess salary and expenses towards efforts which serve to promote, protect and preserve small shops, local businesses and the self-employed. I regard all of these as vital, core elements of both London’s social fabric and economy.”
Upkar believes that small shops, local businesses and the self-employed are a vital element of London’s economy. They are vital to the local community by providing good choice, reasonable prices and excellent customer services. They are the ‘glue’ that binds various communities together.
In addition to his pledge of financial support, Upkar will support the following measures to promote, protect and preserve small shops, local businesses and the self-employed:
• PROMOTE a policy of localism for London – as opposed to globalism. Localism supports the local production and consumption of goods. It puts the local economy, community and environment first. Small shops, local businesses and the self-employed are the corner stone of localism.
• ENCOURAGE small shops, local businesses and the self-employed to start up by cutting local business rates. Stop luring big business via low corporation taxes. Also stop the growth of out-of-town superstores.
• PUT pressure on the banks to issue interest-free loans. If, say, a local shop owner gets a loan of £10,000 then they will only pay that amount back. At the moment, banks create credit out of nothing and then charge interest on it! This is immoral and is crippling those who want to promote the local economy.
• BOOST the local economy by introducing local currencies, similar to the Brixton Pound. Working alongside the Pound Sterling, local currencies encourage spending within the local community, especially with locally owned businesses.
• HOST special days whereby shoppers are encouraged to keep a fiver – or even £1 – over from their ‘big shop’ and spend it locally. Imagine the effect on the local economy if even 100 people spent just £1 in each and every local shop!
