From The Liberty Wall – National Liberal Trade Unionists – Britain Needs A Pay Rise
SATURDAY 18th OCTOBER saw tens of thousands of Trade Unionists on the streets of Belfast, Glasgow and London.  They were protesting about pay and austerity.

The demonstrations – held under the slogan Britain Needs a Pay Risewere organised by the Trades Union Congress (TUC).  The largest march and demo was held in London where around 80,000 – 90,000 attended.  The London demo was well supported by members of Wales TUC (TUC Cymru) who had chartered a train from Cardiff.

As Britain’s public services seem to be under direct attack from the Con-Dem Government, it came as no surprise that many teachers, civil servants, nurses and other NHS workers took part.

The three demonstrations followed public sector strikes earlier in the week.

According to TUC General Secretary Frances O’Grady, the demos were held to highlight the fact that the “average worker is £50 a week worse off than in 2007 and five million earn less than the living wage…If politicians wonder why so many feel excluded from the democratic process, they should start with bread and butter living standards.”

Reflecting on the TUC demonstrations, a National Liberal Trade Unionist (NLTU) spokesman said:

“Cameron and Clegg should dump their austerity agenda.  It’s not working.  It punishes those who’re not responsible for Britain’s economic woes.  Thousands of ordinary British workers are being paid a pittance – the ‘working poor’ – or thrown onto the scrapheap.  At the same time, those who make up the elite are still making money hand over fist.

The recession was brought on by ‘casino capitalism’ – a mixture of greed and mistakes made by the bankers, ‘fat cats’ and speculators.  If anyone should be punished it should be these wide boys and shysters.”

National Liberal Party – From The Liberty Wall – Nations without States – What Must Be Done (7)
.
WHAT MUST BE DONE (7): Welcome to issue 7 of What Must Be Done, the publically-available organising bulletin of Nations without States.  NwS supporters are asked to read – and more importantly – act upon the instructions detailed below:

• COMPETITION. What does self-determination mean to you? The reason for asking is that the Organising Committee of NwS would like to include your thoughts in a future issue of Nation – the Newsletter of nations without States.

Therefore, NwS supporters are encouraged – in 600 words or less – to let us know your thoughts on self-determination.  Please feel free to mention your specific nation or people.  As our self-determination is a universal right, all self-determinists will have no problem in supporting (and showing solidarity with) whatever cause you choose to highlight.

This competition doesn’t feature any prizes – except the satisfaction of having your national freedom struggle featured in Nation. Please e-mail your article to: nationswstates@aol.com

• E-POSTERS. Earlier this year, Nations without States – in conjunction with the National Liberal Party – launched the first in a mini-series of self-determinist e-posters.  We started with Western Sahara and we’ll be working through all of the captive nations that are supported by NwS.

Obviously this will take some time – to say the very least!  However, we’d still like NwS supporters to send us their suggestions for future e-posters.  We’re interested in all styles of e-poster – indeed, it may be the case that the more ‘off the wall’ the better as they may attract more attention.
Either e-mail your idea(s) to nationswstates@aol.com or leave a message on our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/groups/184919468292372/ once this article appears on it.

This issue of What Must Be Done should be read in conjunction with the following articles:

From The Liberty Wall – Fourth World Review – Remembering Leopold Kohr

.

TOWARDS the end of last year, Fourth World Review (4WR) produced its first e-poster.  It honoured EF ‘Fritz’ Schumacher, author of the iconic Small Is Beautiful – A Study Of Economics As If People Mattered.

4WR produced the Schumacher e-poster in response to John Papworth’s call for “a vast educational effort to resolve the multitudinous problems involved in the restructuring of power in society from the ground up rather than the top down.”

In this digital and milisecond media age, 4WR believe’s that one way of promoting this “vast educational effort” is via imaginative and thought-provoking e-posters.

With this in mind, a new e-poster has been produced.  Using a stark red, white and black colour sheme as well as the slogan Small Is Beautiful – effectively 4WRs raison d’être – it aims to introduce a new generation of thinkers and activists to explore the works of Leopold Kohr.

Kohr is best known for his book The Breakdown Of Nations. Written in 1957, this highly original work predicted the problems posed by globalism – effectively before the term ‘globalism’ had ever been used!

He remains a highly original thinker who concluded that the root cause of social evil was that all sections of society had grown too centralized and too big.  Indeed, the influence of the individual decreases exponentially with the increase of the population in a society.

Kohr believed that small nations work better for their citizens in every way – economically, socially, culturally, and so on.  He thus believed that the time was ripe to return to human size – and called for the peaceful dissolution of nation states into smaller independent entities which can network or confederate as they choose.

4WR – as a long-standing radical decentralist publication – believes that Leopold Kohr’s The Breakdown Of Nations should be considered essential reading by those who wish to promote a more ‘rooted’ and natural form of living.  We urge as many people as possible to read it, discuss it and become active in promoting its ideals.

In the meantime, we’d ask readers to ‘Like and Share’ this new 4WR e-poster on Facebook and link this article to any Twitter account(s) you may operate.

From the Liberty Wall – St. George’s Committee Debate (3) – How Do We Replace The Negative Media Stereotype Of England And The English?
GENUINE ENGLISH ADVOCATES – like the St. George’s Committee – universally accept that we must do more to promote English history, heritage, traditions, identity & culture. But in doing so, we face massive challenges. But what are these challenges – and how do we overcome them?

The St. George’s Committee (SGC) feels that prehaps the greatest challenge is that presented by sections of the mass media. This is because many invididuals involved in the media appear to be extremely Anglophobic – in that they exhibit an irrational hatred and loathing of England and the English.

This Anglophobia has led them to smear an entire people and nation. Sadly, they’ve been very successful in doing this. For there’s now a sweeping assumption that the English have no separate identity or culture whatsoever and that we are all simply beer-swilling football holigans. In addition, many people feel that the English are inherently racist and imperialist.

Of course all this is all nonsense. We have absolutely no interest in trying to ‘lord it up’ over others by enforcing our customs and traditions on them. No genuine English patriot would advocate this.

Indeed – if truth be told – most ordinary English working folks have more pressing things on their minds. These would include trying to pay bills and making ends meet rather than trying to repace the former British Empire with a new English Empire!

With this in mind, our question to all English advocates is twofold:

• How do we replace the (Anglophobic) negative media stereotype of England and the English?

• How do English patriots build – and promote – a positive image of themselves and what they stand for?

The debate will be held on the St. George’s Committee facebook page https://www.facebook.com/stgeorgescommittee?fref=ts

From The Liberty Wall – National Liberal Trade Unionists – Do Immigrants Cause Unemployment?
.
.
THE NATIONAL LIBERAL TRADE UNIONISTS (NLTU) are the latest group from the Liberty Wall to produced their own e-poster.

As can be seen, it effectively looks at the claim – mainly made by the reactionary ‘right’ – that immigration causes unemployment.  The NLTU believes this claim is totally wrong and that the capitalist system is the real culprit.  The resulting artwork (above) pulls no punches here.

Eagle-eyed will note that the NLTU has used US-themed artwork.  Here US dollars are coming out of the ears of the capitalist – as opposed to sterling!  However, this is to illustrate that the problem of (and solution to) unemployment is the same the world over.

But first thing’s first.  We have to accept that we live in a capitalist society.  We may not like it, but capitalism is the world’s dominant social, economic and political system.  It’s a highly unstable and unfair system – it fluctuates between boom and bust at fairly regular intervals and allows for poverty amongst plenty.

However one thing always remains the same.  And that is it’s a system that’s always stacked in favour of a very tiny minority as opposed to the vast majority.

The NLTU is anti-capitalist (both national and international varieties) and relies on millions of people as a whole.  It exploits the third world, it’s wasteful, destroys the natural world and produces a load of rubbish.

The capitalist system is also to be opposed as it views all working folks (both blue and white collar) as mere worker ants.  At the end of the day, everyone is expendable.  It’s a ‘dog-eat-dog’ system whereby profit is the name of the game.

Capitalism knows no loyality or compassion.  It’s the sole ‘mover and shaker’ behind the whole move towards globalisation.  Indeed, it’s the only beneficiary of the policy of allowing free movement of capital and labour. This is why various industries are happy enough to ‘up sticks’ and chase – and exploit – lower wages across the globe.

At the same time capitalism encourages immigrants from poor and under-developed countries to move to ‘richer’ and more industrialised nations.  The immigrants move as they – understandably – want to improve their lives.

It should come as no surprise that capitalism views these poor immigrants with contempt.  They are far easier to exploit and manipulate than indigenous workers as the latter tend to be unionised and reasonably familiar with their rights in respect of pay and conditions.  Illegal immigrants are even easier to manipulate.  In short, immigrants are victims of the capitalist system.

To recap, the reason for high-levels of immigration is because importing large numbers of people into any country is, as far as the capitalist elite is concerned, a long-term investment.  The indigenous elderly – as well as the indigenous underclass, of course – do not fill their coffers to the same extent and are therefore expendable.

The NLTU is against mass – and unrestricted – immigration.  Our opposition is based on grounds of sustainability, a democratic deficit (in that ordinary working folks were never asked if they were in favour of immigration) and the fact that immigrants are used as slave labour and tax fodder to keep the the super-rich elite in their plush lifestyles.

We’re also opposed to the idea that immigration is the main cause of unemployment.  The nations of Britain have always had periods of unemployment – even when their workforce consisted of indigenous workers.  As our e-poster notes the capitalist system is the real problem – and it is our task to replace this system with a Distributist system whereby the ownership of property and the means of production, distribution and exchange are as widespread as possible.

• THE NATIONAL LIBERAL TRADE UNIONISTS would appreciate any feedback on our first e-poster.  Secondly, we’d really appreciate any ideas – including links to photographs and/or artwork – you may have for future e-posters.  Just post them up on in the comments section of the National Liberal Trade Unionists Facebook page when this article appears.

From The Liberty Wall – National Liberal Trade Unionists Debate (4) – How Should Trade Unionists View The EU?

NATIONAL LIBERAL TRADE UNIONISTS have recently marked two of the most important days in the industrial calendar. Workers’ Memorial Day (WMD) is held on 28th April every year. Here trade unionists “remember the dead, but fight like hell for the living.” And 1st May – also known as International Workers Day – is when the entire trade union movement celebrates its core values, history and heritage. Trade unionists will also be looking towards a future date – 22nd May – with interest. This is when UK voters go to the polls to elect a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) who will represent them in Brussels and Strasbourg. So what should our attitude be towards the European Union? Possibly the easiest way of answering this is to examine our principles. We can see if the workings of the EU – in any way – relate to them. National Liberal Trade Union principles are defined as:liberty (putting the individual member first) and patriotism (defending workers from globalisation), and be liberal (increasing employee share ownership) and economic (focusing activity in the workplace) in practice.” (1)
