What The Papers Say – Shop Local!

FOR SOME time now, the National Liberal Party has featured a Letters of the Month section, which can be found here: http://nationalliberal.org/letters-of-the-month

According to the introduction to the Letters of the Month section, it “hosts letters published in local or national papers from members or supporters. We encourage you to write something that refers to the party or one of our policies.” Readers are asked to then send in copies of successfully printed letters to the NLPs e-mail address: natliberal@aol.com

We’d now like to extend this idea to include articles that have appeared in the media (especially in the local media) which are broadly in accordance with our ideas. We believe that there are lots of people out there who are naturally ‘national liberal’ in their views – but are unaware that the NLP exist as a political movement! (However, it should be noted that, the printing of such articles in this new What the Papers Say section does not imply that the writer or the media source are official members or supporters of the NLP.)

Here we reproduce a centre-piece article which appeared in last month’s issue of the West Belfast-based Shankill Extra. The Shankill Extra appears to be a successor paper to the old Shankill Mirror. Eagle-eyed readers may recall that we featured an article from the Mirror late last year: http://nationalliberal.org/what-the-papers-say-big-brother-is-watching-you

The article featured a banner heading Support Your Local Trader and carried the strapline A Great Place To Shop. Whilst the brief article – which was accompanied by a host of small adverts for local traders – specifically refers to the Shankill, what is said could refer to any local shopping area.

Shop Local!

IT WAS once said that it didn’t matter what you were looking for, whether it was a needle or an anchor, the Shankill Road was the place to go. The anchor might be a bit harder to find these days but you never know! This special Traders Adverts in the Shankill Extra is to highlight the wide range of businesses and services that you can avail of and it is quite literally on your door step.

Here are 10 REASONS TO BUY LOCAL:

1. The more our community buys from Shankill Road traders the more money stays within our community.

2. Local shops and businesses provide goods and services that local people want.

3. Buying locally strengthens local ties – many of the Shankill businesses are owned and run by local people who are our friends and neighbours who have helped build our community.

4. We can all choose to spend our money – spending locally is our positive choice to support the local economy.

5. Local spending will help maintain a vibrant Shankill Road, with no empty shops and less vandalism.

6. A unique character of the Shankill is the number of totally independent businesses. Spending it local will keep it local.

7. As the largest group of employers across Northern Ireland small businesses provide most jobs for local people.

8. Get a good service – local businesses employ local people who understand the needs of local people.

9. You can do your bit for the environment, reduce your carbon footprint and keep fit! – walk to your local shops and services.

10. Local services offer the personal touch and sure you can always have a bit of crack and catch up on the local gossip!

Remember, by buying local you will – Support your local trader – Support your local community and Support your Neighbours.

The Lies Of Homeless And Social Housing

THE MANY PROBLEMS associated with Britain’s housing crisis (including bad housing and homelessness) were recently discussed on the National Liberals Facebook page – check out Facebook/National Liberals. Here NLP members and supporters put forward different ideas aimed at solving this problem. One of those involved in the debate was 19-year-old college student Robert Byng from Barrhead in Scotland.

Given his passionate interest in the subject, Robert was asked to write an article that detailed his radical ideas for solving the housing crisis. His article is featured below.

Robert also edits The Young Political Radical, a highly distinctive blog which pulls no punches. Check it out here: http://theyoungpoliticalradical.blogspot.co.uk/

AH FRIENDS – here we are again – once again breaking down the many lies that are force fed to us like brussel sprouts at Christmas. This time we will look at the greatest atrocity to hit a nation where millionaires are allowed to gain power in to government and tell us that we are all in it together while at the same time stabbing a blade of authority into little children and the old; that atrocity is the inadequate social policy on housing.

The combined calculations of the Westminster and Scottish Parliaments, and the Welsh Assembly, puts calculations of empty homes in Scotland, England and Wales to approximately 800,000 with an estimated 250,000 homeless people living in temporary accommodation, 500,000 living on the streets and 250,000 living in squat or in tents. Approximately 1 million homeless and 800,000 spare houses to occupy and turn them into homes.

Some may consider it immoral to take the unoccupied homes from their owners however I see it as a massive opportunity for those who own such homes to become the generation’s next land lords.

Take the empty houses, place a homeless person or persons in it; the homeless are sheltered, warm and safe which will reduce costs on the nation for medical expenses for the sickness that is sadly spread through those who are exposed to the rain, cold and winds that our fair isles are known for, they are able to claim benefits and have a stable address to look for a job and increase their confidence, and the reduction of exposure to violence and drugs which could make a world of difference, especially to those under the age of 25 who probably never stood a chance in life due to whatever reason.

The owners of the empty homes are getting extra money in their pockets to spend on silly hats and posh wines, adding to the economy, and we become a much more equal society where no one is left to starve or freeze.

On the short term it may be expensive however this is countered by the long term opportunities to reduce the drug affliction rate, and the morality of offering our more fragile citizens a chance to turn their lives around, get a job, contribute, pay taxes and raise a clean and productive family.

Radical morality goes a long way in our nation’s history – from homes for heroes in the 20th century to homes for everyone in the 21st.

What of those, however, who are housed in local authority housing? Well, that is a much more difficult area to examine.

I’m Scottish and our laws are much different, especially in housing. In Scotland, no local authority under the Scottish Parliament may make any one homeless – even if someone is evicted, they must be placed into new housing. Yes, sensible, kick them out and toss them in to a new home – I’m sure David Cameron’s bedroom tax will make this a buffet of carnival ride styled evictions. In, out, in out, in out.

In my local authority of East Renfrewshire, and mainly in my home town of Barrhead, we have had massive amounts of investment – a new medical centre, new community centre, the mainstream dolled up, and lovely new … private sector and housing association homes. That’s the biggest problem, all investment seems to be done by private sector and housing association land lords rather than the local authority itself. Don’t misunderstand, East Renfrewshire is an excellent local authority to live in, but the management is clueless.

The biggest grudge I have with local authorities is that they evict people from homes that the common man has paid for; quite literally friends: you paid for the construction of local authority housing, the street cleaners and the wigs on the aging counsellors. Your taxes made it possible to build them, you own them. Yet local authorities seem to misunderstand this fact, they seem to believe that they are never accountable to their residents.

Well, friends, I say this: No to unelected Chief executives; no to evictions for innocents; no to evictions due to taxation; and no to poor excuses from both central and local government.

Local authorities must begin to put real effort in to their housing stock. Not this ‘regeneration’ which sees only areas in the shopping areas, not regeneration that only concentrated on the external appeal to the eye of the social housing stock, but the regeneration of the internal quality of homes – local authorities must either being to revamp their stock, introduce modern facilities such as sufficient electricity sources, lighting, damp-proof lining, showers, affordable methods of heating, and common green space, or merely knock them down because if the former isn’t performed the houses will be crumbling in to pieces any ways.

In my closest city of Glasgow where I grew up as a young lad before moving to Barrhead there were Victorian style slums where homes were damp, windows did not protect against the rain or cold, and plumbing was like something from the Chuckle Brothers.

Was it the fault of the people who lived there? Not even close friends, the majority of people who lived there are hard at work each day trying to make it through the year. They inherited poor housing because if you apply for social housing, you seldom have a choice in the condition of your home.

It’s a lie that we live in a fair democracy where the quality of housing is higher in the private sector which has a small budget in comparison to our local authorities who exist with our money yet prefer to pay our high wages and toss hundred pound notes into the tea pots of official meetings.

Friends, we need change.

We need long term fixation. We need solutions that will last a life time and not solutions that will last until the next budget.

When a local authority tells you that they are doing everything they can to provide housing you must not take it at face value, you must, friends, research in to it; look at houses. Are they clean? Are the streets full of pot holes? Do the windows look 40 years old? Do the residents spend more than normal on heating?

Invest, not supress. Create not destroy. Economics has never shown austerity to be an effective method of resolving financial crisis in the West. We must circulate our finance into longevity.

We must change our thinking and plan for the future as a nation: our housing, roads, trains, airports, cities, towns and villages are all lacking in comparison to the rest of Europe.

Only by a standing with the National Liberty Party and ideals of self-determination and a fight for, not against, democracy, equality and freedom will we do this.

National Liberal Debate 5 – How Do We Solve Unemployment? – Have Your Say!
THE MANY problems faced by Britain – whether economic or social – are not going to be solved by screaming and shouting. Thus, the National Liberal Party is not interested in ‘hitting the headlines’ using the tired formula of macho–posturing and gesture politics. These problems will only be overcome by a combination of careful thought and action.

This means that we favour informed and reasoned debate. Here we concentrate on arguments, points of view and facts. We are not interested in personalities, prejudice or promoting self-interest.

The National Liberal Party seeks to build an organisation that encourages free speech and debate. To do this, we also attempt to take into consideration as many views as is possible in open debate. Thus, members and supporters are always encouraged to have their say.

We’re also interested in encouraging people to develop their debating skills. That’s why the NLP has introduced a new series of articles called Have Your Say! Whilst each subject will be announced on this web-site, they’ll be conducted in full on the National Liberals Facebook site, which can be found here: http://www.facebook.com/home.php#!/groups/52739504313/?fref=ts

Before we start this debate we’d like to remind folks of our ground rules:

  • First of all, say what you think – but think what you say.

  • Secondly, just debate the issue(s) raised. There should be no personal attacks.

  • As previously noted, we’re simply not interested in personalities.

  • Please note that we may ask selected members and supporters to play ‘devil’s advocate’. Hopefully, this’ll help sharpen the debating skills of all involved!

  • Finally, it should be remembered that all of the views expressed in Have Your Say! are personal and should not be taken to be the official view of the NLP itself.

With all this in mind, we just want to ask one simple question – How Do We Solve Unemployment?

The Prison of Prisms

Our resident poet Jason reflects upon the scandal of the US Government’s (and possibly the UK’s GHQ via them) using a programme ‘Prism’ to read peoples communications by tapping into major private servers.

Dear Friends,

The poem “Prison of Prisms” tackles the very hot debate currently on : on intelligence gathering programme called “prism” tapping into everything we the modern social net-workers use daily including this message and Yahoo, Google, Skype, Microsoft and so on. Though the global village shrinks to a controllable size for “prism” programmes to manage, the whistle blowers too surface to check the State’s excessive spying, often bordering on illegal use of such programmes, on the ordinary man. Hence the words liberty, freedom, privacy etc when politicians speak, but be warned, they are actually asking your permission to create prisons for you………
The Prison of Prisms
Exalted Liberty got fatally shot-on,
Freedom bleeds by Achilles tendon,
Privacy dear to people, to pieces blown
By state apparatus – the be-all-guardian
Of people, taking liberty to a new mean’ng!
The nets of web, cast wide to press-on,
The dawn of information age; encapsulate
The ignorant ordinary man into prison,
Gate –kept by members, the very electorate
Elect; hence the world a prison of prisms.
Orwellian state came long of age
The prism moves of states – a new passage
Into controlling this global village
We call earth. Ever grows large
The nation state and its secret pillage
Of everything humans exchange!
Liberty get pinched to upstage security,
Thrown to wind, balance and accountability,
Prisms part of overtly networked society;
Prisons too will expand to cage masses with impunity
And yet modern Orwells’ shall rise too, to check the authority
Of states!

Protests in Turkey: A Turkish Spring?

The events in Turkey are being watched with interest. There have been disquieting reports over the last year that the ruling Islamic conservative party the Justice and Development Party (AKP) were beginning to tighten their grip on Turkish political and social life. All manner of citizens were concerned, liberals, nationalists, social democrats and socialists. The initial protest over turning a public park into a shopping mall started small but quickly mushroomed in reaction to the brutal police reaction. As National Liberals we view with disquiet the reaction of the Police to legitimate and peaceful protest and the steady erosion of civil liberties in general. Our National Liberal correspondent in Turkey, Ozgur Karakok, sends us this report.

At the beginning it was to save 600 trees and the park area at the center of Istanbul by Taksim square. However, faced with the horrifying attack by the Turkish police force on the protesters campaigning against the redevelopment of Gezi Park in Istanbul it grew into something more. Whilst the protest started small, it soon became an example of the struggle for more freedoms in Turkey. Mass protests spread all over Turkey because of bans and pressure on people to adopt Islamic rules and the unfair actions of public institutions. The latter in particular is seen as evidence of orchestrated political processes and control over the executive, legislative and judicial branches of Government by Turkey’s ruling party ,Islamist conservative party AKP.

The excessive use of power by police raids is in the social media on facebook, twitter, and YouTube. The police are beating everyone they catch and these attacks are often seen in many cities. This barbarous action, in the so-called name of democracy, freedom of speech, and human rights, is a disgrace. Many of us worry about the fate of the many protesters held by police at police stations and their consequences are still not known and there is a suspicion that violence is visited upon them.

Now AKP is not keeping promises and there is no democracy anymore in Turkey for there is a dictatorship regime and there is a change from a secular to Islamist state. AKP is abandoning all the good things that secularism brought to them and us all slowly but surely.

I will try to tell you that how Turks allowed AKP come to power:

First of all I can tell you that people were not happy with the previous system and legislation because for a long time it was infested with corruption and the public body lost its fidelity, dependability and reliability in the eyes of the people. This gives them (AKP) a chance to tell lies and create a scenario of hope to the public to entice them to reject the past dogmas. I can also tell you that the elections have been worth by fraud twice since 2002 and that AKP party won the election. Later I can tell you that Turkish people are not very familiar with the concept of democracy and people’s ability to adopt democracy is taking time to process, if you compare any developed country’s people with the Turkish people I can really tell you that there are couple decades of a period of maturity for Turkish people to reach those developed countries peoples level. Finally I can tell you that most of those protesters belong to younger generation so they are very adaptable to change but their future expectations are equal to their generation expectations in developed countries. They do not belong to any political party or group and all have different political point of view and thoughts. They know their individual rights and freedoms and they know that they deserve respect as citizens. And the people (the civilians) understand that they are the protectors of the Ataturk legacy and no longer the army because over the last 10 years all the secular generals have been removed from the army by AKP through several dirty tricks.

At the end of it all we will see whether these protests are able to open a door for a Turkish Spring or just the anger of the people which calms down over time? I hope it is the latter.

From The Liberty Wall – Nations Without States – What Must Be Done (4)
WHAT MUST BE DONE (4): Welcome to issue 4 of What Must Be Done, the publically-available organising bulletin of Nations without States. NwS supporters are asked to read – and more importantly – act upon the instructions detailed below.

NATION – ISSUE 1 – HARD COPY: The first issue of Nation – the ‘Newsletter of Nations without States’ – was published towards the end of last month. Many thanks are due to those NwS supporters who made donations towards printing costs. The publication of Nation represents a small (but very important) step forward for self-determinists throughout the world.

As can be seen, this issue prominently displays the flags of 30 nations who feel that they are being oppressed in one way or another. They include Balochistan, Catalonia, England, Matebeleland, Panjaab, Rif, Sabah, Sarawak, Sindh, Tamil Eelam and West Papua.

Nation declares that “all nations and peoples have the right to self-determination. The right to determine one’s destiny is universal. This includes the right of nations and peoples to choose their own political status as well as their own form of economic, cultural and social development.”

It notes that exercising the right to self-determination “will probably signal the end of many Empires and Superstates.”

Nation goes on to describe the various forms of oppression suffered by those who fight for self-determination. It concludes by stating that self-determinists of the world must unite and fight. “We need to follow a strategy which will be conducted both on the street and in the corridors of power.”

It is essential that we get all 2000 copies of Nation into the hands of self-determinist activists as soon as possible. They can then distribute it at various demonstrations and meetings. To get hold of your copy/copies simply send a Private Message to Graham Williamson via Facebook or e-mail Nations without States: nationswstates@aol.co.uk

NATION – ISSUE 1 – PDF COPY: As Nation is printed on glossy paper it’s very expensive to post abroad. However, supporters of Nations without States who live outside of the UK can still get hold of a copy! Simply e-mail Graham Williamson at nationswstates@aol.co.uk or send him a Private Message via Facebook – and ask for your FREE pdf copy of Nation.
