The National Liberal Party says Self-Determination for the Cornish Nation!

Technically, the United Kingdom is composed of four constituent nations: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. However, some believe that there are others too, Isle of Man (presently a Crown dependancy) and Cornwall. They are seen by many of their residents as ‘different’. If so then perhaps they too should be part of a Devo-Max Britain?

SUPPORTING LOCAL SHOPS!
Small, local shops have been under intense pressure for years. Excessively high rents, increasing red tape and growing supermarket competition have all taken their toll. Thousands have gone to the wall leaving whole communities bereft of vibrant shopping areas, so vital to ‘community spirit’.
In recent years the greatest threat seems to have been Tesco’s expansion into high streets using their ‘Tesco Express’ brand. Smaller in size and focussing on convenience items, but benefiting from Tesco’s purchasing power’, they deliberately target those who don’t wish to visit out-of-town sites for small, daily purchases.
In order to get permission to open up in small high streets they are often prepared to give ‘promises’ that they will not directly ‘attack’ local businesses’. For example, in Cuffley (Hertfordshire) they agreed not to install a Lottery machine as local newsagents already had.

Cllr Brent Cheetham

However, after opening in 2007 they recently installed just such a machine thus breaking their ‘gentleman’s agreement’. Local and National Liberal Parish Councillor Brent Cheetham led, with others, a campaign to remind them of their “amnesia and broken promises” and was later supported by the local newspaper. Tesco immediately put the decision on hold.

A SMALL VICTORY

After a flurry of press letters, Tesco finally relented. In a letter to Councillor Cheetham, the Head of Tesco’s Regional Corporate Affairs, stated that after ‘having listened to the local community, I am pleased to say we will not be introducing (the) lottery to the store’.
It was a very small but significant victory for ‘Shop Local’ campaigners and we congratulate Brent and all of them for their vigilance. Sadly however, the decline of the small shop is relentless. In the absence of local or national help e.g. tax breaks, rate discounting etc the mantle of resistance continue to falls to residents to spend some of their hard earned cash in their shop. As the slogan says ‘Use them or lose to them!’.

NLP NEW YEAR MESSAGE
.
The NLP has an opportunity to influence UK politics way above its present strength due to its involvement in the exciting new co-operative group Total Democracy http://www.facebook.com/TotalDemocracyUK/
There is a great and growing sense of disillusionment (as apart from mere apathy) with our political system coupled with an intense dislike of professional politicians. However, in our opinion, no single party can mobilise the discontented masses and change British politics on its own, due to the antiquated electoral system under which we labour and the underlying strength of the three ‘tribal’ traditions.
Since the three traditions are unlikely to ever coalesce and no single party will be able to magically appeal to all sections of a public, fragmented by class, ethnicity and wealth too, only a coalition of parties that appeal across the social and political spectrum can ‘unify’ the discontented. Next year will provide us and others with the opportunity to begin that process in the ‘long march’ required to fundamentally change British politics for the better. Be a part of us, be a part of that. Happy New Year!

Christmas 2012 – Support Your Local Shops!

YES it’s that time of year again – Christmas is coming! But in your haste to do the shopping, don’t forget the local shops and businesses in your area. Give them an early Christmas present by shopping locally today.

The National Liberal Party knows that times are hard and price considerations are obviously very important, but many small shops depend on their Christmas trade to see them through much of the following year. At present, many shopkeepers are hit hard by the recession – caused by the credit crunch – high interest rates and the criminal bank debt-system.

The shopkeeper, as a self-employed businessman or woman, plays a vital role in the local economy. (And don’t forget that these small shops collectively employ hundreds of thousands of workers throughout the length and breadth of Britain). Local shops are not only important for the elderly and young mothers, but are part of the glue that helps to maintain community spirit – a place to bump into friends, neighbours and relatives.

If we don’t support our local shops and businesses today, we may loose them forever. Then people will have no other choice to travel directly into the nearest city or town centre for the smallest of items. This may be ok if you have your own transport and are fit and healthy. However, the elderly or young mothers wouldn’t really look forward to beating a path through the massive Saturday shopping crowds found in our large towns and cities.

The message is clear. For the community spirit to survive and prosper, we must give local shops as much trade as possible. The National Liberal Party says support your local shops, shopkeepers and shop workers. Shop locally this Christmas!
