Review of Caledonian Voice

CALEDONIAN VOICE was the first national publication produced by the National Liberal Party way back in July of last year. Hopefully, issue 2 will be out in the not too distant future.

This review of CV has been written by Liam Clarke. As with his previous article The Agenda (click here to view it: http://nationalliberal.org/the-agenda) Liam’s review is full of passion, sincerity and is highly personal.

Whilst not everyone will agree with everything he says, especially on what constitute a nation or what a Westminster Parliament represents, eaders should know that discussion is absolutely free with the NLP. You can leave any feedback – good, bad or indifferent – on our National Liberal debate page. Check it out on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/52739504313/

I FIND it beyond belief that David Cameron does not take seriously the threat (posed by the Scottish National Party) to the break up of the United Kingdom. While it is true that the majority of people in Scotland are against leaving the UK, the most passionate are the opposition – those who want independence. Therefore, when the vote eventually does arrive they will be out in force.

To me, Cameron’s stance shows, yet again, that the weakness of the British government has undermined the very patriotism that has kept us together for such a long time. Patriotism means nothing to them.

The Union of free peoples is not an important question in our Eton-educated ‘Mr Slippery’s’ mind. Perhaps because he has been surrounded by people from all the aristocratic families in each of the four sister-nations, he thinks the only reason they want independence is so they can make the rivalry at a rugby match even more intense.

Cameron has no real sense of what the Scottish people want. He hasn’t even bothered to ask them. However, nor has his opponent the Scottish Stalin that is Alex Salmond. He is so filled with racial prejudice that he cannot see beyond the catastrophic figure of Mel Gibson dressed in a skirt and blue paint.

I believe that the Scottish people do not want to be separated from their brothers and sisters across the borders. I think too much water has passed under the bridge for anyone to seriously contemplate that idea.

Nonetheless, many would like to see a more self-sufficient Scotland (but not outright independence) and it seems that the Devo Max solution advocated by Caledonian Voice – the Voice of the National Liberal Party in Scotland – provides the answer. Additonally, it will solve the problem of English republicans who call for an English Parliament. Through Devo Max this will become a reality, as with a self-sufficient (but not independent) Scotland, Westminster would become very much an English Parliament.

However, even with Devo-max I’m worried about one thing. Slowly breaking down the barriers by pushing for bigger powers for smaller countries (and England to have its own fully fledged parliament) would not be seen as a victory for Nationalism or Patriotism. I’d see it as a knife through the heart of the very thing I seek to protect – our National Identity.

As progressive National Liberals we long for greater freedom for the individual. Through the ‘Third Way’, the Devo Max option, we can give that to the Scottish people. But even the most ‘free’ individual is one, who can rely on their brothers and sisters whenever trouble may come knocking.

Carry On Tweeting!
TWITTER is an online social networking service and microblogging service that enables its users to send and read text-based messages of up to 140 characters at a time. It means that messages are short, sharp, and to the point.

The National Liberal Party has two Twitter accounts – National Liberal Party and National_Libera – and we’ve now got over 2000 followers (and counting!)
We’re realistic enough to realise that whilst it’s a step in the right direction, 2000 followers represent a mere drop in the ocean. It’s miniscule compared to establishment political parties. For instance, according to a Centre for the Analysis of Social Media (CASM) briefing paper produced this year by Demos (1) the Conservatives have 430,893 followers on Twitter whilst Labour has 316,237. (To put this in perspective, a ‘Celeb’ like Katie Price aka Jordan has 1,792,998 people enthusiastically following her tweets!)

Despite this, every National Liberal should welcome the development – and expansion – of our Twitter accounts as they represent a great way of promoting our message.

With this in mind we’d encourage all NLP members and supporters with their own Twitter accounts to do two things:

i) If you don’t already do so, follow us on Twitter, and

ii) Re-tweet as many of our tweets as possible.

We’re also open to suggestions as to what we should be tweeting. For instance, are there any subjects that are dear to your heart – say, social and economic issues, the environment, civil liberties or whatever – that you’d like us to concentrate on? And if so, what should we say – remember, messages can be up to to 140 characters. Should we be linking more to pictures and/or artwork? Let us know (simply e-mail natliberal@aol.com or leave feedback on the National Liberals Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/groups/52739504313/ once this article has been posted up on it) and we’ll do our best to oblige.

Latest Issue Of St. Andrews Voice (Havering) Out Now!
THE NATIONAL LIBERAL PARTY is well-known for the number of educational and outreach publications that it produces.

So far we’ve produced two issues of New Horizon, our ideological magazine and two issues of the Isle of Wight Voice. In addition to this, we’ve published one issue each of Caledonian Voice, English Voice, Kent Voice and Liberty & Nation. (Future issues of all of these titles are also in the pipeline.)

One of the main reasons why we produce all of these publications is to build an alternative media that can promote the concept of National Liberalism. This, in turn, attracts those who already have a deep interest in politics. Hopefully, these people will be interested in taking up positions within the NLP and thus become part of our national and regional infrastructure.

However, perhaps the most important of our publications is a local one – St. Andrews Voice which circulates in a council ward in Havering, Essex.

And the reason why it’s so important is simply because it is local.

This is because the vast majority of ordinary decent working folks have a matter–of-fact attitude to politics (and especially local politics.) They are simply not interested in lofty concepts like National Freedom and Social Justice or Civil and Religious liberties for all.

Instead, they will support and vote for political parties who address local issues like bin collections, cracked paving stones, pot holes and the like. This is where a publication like St. Andrews Voice comes into its own.

With local people producing it, it can discuss local issues and provide local answers. It can even be used to promote local activities – say, petitions, leafleting and so on – which will benefit the community. Indeed, our activists have been relentlessly leafleting with the latest issue of St. Andrews Voice since it was produced in very late August.

With this in mind, we’d encourage all of our members and supporters to consider starting up local publications which will deal with local issues. To do this, just follow these two simple steps:

• To get an idea of what a local publication looks like (both content and design-wise) just e-mail natliberal@aol.com and ask for your FREE pdf copy of St. Andrews Voice

• Using the latest issue of St. Andrews Voice as a guide, write a few brief articles about local problems in your area. Don’t worry too much about the grammar and spelling as we can sort that end of things out. Send your articles to natliberal@aol.com and one of our team will be in touch with you as soon as possible.

Even if your Voice isn’t immediately produced as a hard copy – maybe due to lack of local finances or manpower to help with distribution – it can still be produced as a pdf. This is a great step in the right direction as each publication produced helps us build up the infrastructure of our alternative media. Your Voice can then be viralled out and hopefully will attract local readers and support.

National Liberal Debate 6 – What Should Britain’s Defence Policy Be? – Have Your Say!

THE MANY problems faced by Britain – whether economic or social – are not going to be solved by screaming and shouting. Thus, the National Liberal Party is not interested in ‘hitting the headlines’ using the tired formula of macho–posturing and gesture politics. These problems will only be overcome by a combination of careful thought and action.

This means that we favour informed and reasoned debate. Here we concentrate on arguments, points of view and facts. We are not interested in personalities, prejudice or promoting self-interest.

The National Liberal Party seeks to build an organisation that encourages free speech and debate. To do this, we also attempt to take into consideration as many views as is possible in open debate. Thus, members and supporters are always encouraged to have their say.

We’re also interested in encouraging people to develop their debating skills. That’s why the NLP has introduced a new series of articles called Have Your Say! Whilst each subject will be announced on this web-site, they’ll be conducted in full on the National Liberals Facebook site, which can be found here: http://www.facebook.com/home.php#!/groups/52739504313/?fref=ts

Before we start this debate we’d like to remind folks of our ground rules:

  • First of all, say what you think – but think what you say.

  • Secondly, just debate the issue(s) raised. There should be no personal attacks.

  • As previously noted, we’re simply not interested in personalities.

  • Please note that we may ask selected members and supporters to play ‘devil’s advocate’. Hopefully, this’ll help sharpen the debating skills of all involved!

  • Finally, it should be remembered that all of the views expressed in Have Your Say! are personal and should not be taken to be the official view of the NLP itself.

With all this in mind, we ask National Liberals to consider one simple question – What Should Britain’s Defence Policy Be? – Have Your Say!

New ‘Shop Local’ Leaflet & Poster Coming Soon

THE NATIONAL LIBERAL PARTY’S ‘Shop Local’ campaign will soon enter its next phase with the introduction of a new range of leaflets and posters.

The new phase of our campaign will see the NLP build on the success of its Buying Local To Support Your Local Economy! leaflets and posters. These were distributed all over Britain. Aimed primarily at consumers our literature urged them to shop local.

Our new leaflet and poster (entitled Stand And Deliver!) break new ground in that they support the self-employed – in addition to local shops and small businesses – and attack the current banking system.

So why support the self-employed?

As a Distributist movement the National Liberal Party is opposed to both capitalism and socialism. Economically, we believe in a ‘Third Way’. We feel that that the self-employed represent a cornerstone of the British economy. Along with shop owners and small businesses they are vital to the well-being of the local economy. Indeed, it’s probably true to say that the self-employed are some of the hardest working people around.

But why attack the banks?

The NLP is particularly excited about our new Stand And Deliver! leaflets and posters. As far as we’re aware, this’ll be the first time a modern political movement has produced a popular educational leaflet which exposes the ‘daylight robbery’ committed by the banks.

This is where create ‘credit’ out of nothing and then charge interest on this! This means that you pay much, much, more back to the bank than you actually get from them. As our literature notes: “Years ago Highwaymen robbed you. Today the banks do it instead!”

Stand And Deliver! demands that the banks should provide interest-free loans to local shops, small businesses and the self-employed. Additionally, these loans must be payable back to the banks at a very low rate.

Look out for updates about about our new leaflets and posters. This new range will be available in the very near future.
