Policy Brief

Message from the National Secretary

If you believe that our personal freedoms are under threat and need to be protected, that our democracy is too reliant upon professional politicians and should be ‘devolved’ to the people, that the UK should be a proper Federal state, and that nation-state(s) should be maintained and protected from the excesses of globalisation or the designs of supranational bodies such as the EU, then you will find your views within the National Liberal Party.

This document is a Policy Brief which highlights just a few of our policies, but always evolving to satisfy the desire of our citizens and a changing ‘environment’. Please click HERE to download it now.

National Liberal Debate 8 – How Can We Defeat The ‘Money Power? – Have Your Say!

THE MANY problems faced by Britain – whether economic or social – are not going to be solved by screaming and shouting. Thus, the National Liberal Party is not interested in ‘hitting the headlines’ using the tired formula of macho–posturing and gesture politics. These problems will only be overcome by a combination of careful thought and action.

This means that we favour informed and reasoned debate. Here we concentrate on arguments, points of view and facts. We are not interested in personalities, prejudice or promoting self-interest.

The National Liberal Party seeks to build an organisation that encourages free speech and debate. To do this, we also attempt to take into consideration as many views as is possible in open debate. Thus, members and supporters are always encouraged to have their say.

We’re also interested in encouraging people to develop their debating skills. That’s why the NLP has introduced a new series of articles called Have Your Say! Whilst each subject will be announced on this web-site, they’ll be conducted in full on the National Liberals Facebook site, which can be found here: http://www.facebook.com/home.php#!/groups/52739504313/?fref=ts

Before we start this debate we’d like to remind folks of our ground rules:

  • First of all, say what you think – but think what you say.

  • Secondly, just debate the issue(s) raised. There should be no personal attacks.

  • As previously noted, we’re simply not interested in personalities.

  • Please note that we may ask selected members and supporters to play ‘devil’s advocate’. Hopefully, this’ll help sharpen the debating skills of all involved!

  • Finally, it should be remembered that all of the views expressed in Have Your Say! are personal and should not be taken to be the official view of the NLP itself.

To kick off this debate we’d ask folks to take a couple of minutes out to watch the following video: http://www.neweconomics.org/blog/entry/why-inequality-isnt-just-about-fairness It’s been produced to highlight economic inequality in Britain.  It shows how a very small minority have a vast amount of wealth.

Given the relationship between money and power (hence the term ‘Money Power’) our question relates to the enormous political power exercised by a tiny minority of super-wealthy individuals, families and vested interests.  Our question for National Liberals is simple: How Can We Defeat The ‘Money Power? – Have Your Say!

Stand Up For Freedom

WAY BACK in June the National Liberal Party celebrated Magna Carta Day. As far as we’re aware, we’re the only political party that acknowledges the signing of the Magna Carta. Why is this?

The main reason is simple – we regard the Magna Carta as one of the most important documents ever produced which relate to freedom.

Indeed, in the UK, the signing of the Magna Carta document (798 years ago) by King John and his Barons represented the first time a Monarch accepted that he/she had responsibilities and their ‘subjects’ had rights.

As the protection of a citizen’s Civil and Religious Liberties is one of our core principles, it’s vital that we remember this vital document. And we’d encourage everyone who supports these freedoms to join or support the National Liberal Party. We feel that our unique fusion of two great political progressive tendancies – Nationalism and Liberalism – will be to your liking.

On saying this, we understand that whilst everyone is interested in freedom, not everyone is interested in party politics. However you can still do your bit for freedom by supporting one of these single-issue groups who appear on our Liberty Wall:

Planning for the future!

Showing the new NLTU Banner

The autumn NLP’s Activist Seminar in Central London discussed the imminent launch of the party’s new Policy Brief, reports from supported pressure groups, and speeches (including outside guests) on the campaign to get the option of ‘None of the Above’ on all ballot papers.

Delegates completed a survey on issues that they believed was most important to them and the general public. The answers were extremely varied perhaps reflecting the diverse background of members, ranging from pensioners to social workers to trade union reps to shopkeepers.
Whilst many felt the average citizen was most concerned about unemployment, immigration. And low wages. Member’s top three concerns were unemployment/job security, and low wages. The draft Policy Brief was discussed and suggestions taken on board prior to publication.
Delegates were invited to propose campaign issues. The most popular were: Support for a ‘Living Wage’. Against over-development, Decriminalisation of/greater education on drugs.
Delegates from the St. George’s Committee explained their work promoting England’s rich cultural heritage. They believed that an inclusive public culture is one way of uniting diverse peoples. All agreed they would like to see their efforts replicated throughout the UK via St. David’s, St. Andrew’s and Ulster Committees. The Chairman of the ‘National Liberal Trade Unionists’, Glen Nicklasson, addressed the meeting about the groups desire to gather all non-socialist trade unionists under its banner. Copies of its new broadsheet, the Liberal Worker that is campaigning for a Living Wage, was handed out to attendees. Delegates from the self-determinist group ‘Nations without States’ urged everyone to support their work i.e. to free captive nations around the world.
The end of the meeting was turned over to the cross-party Total Democracy group see to explain why it was supporting a campaign to put to ‘None of the Above’ (NOTA) on every ballot paper. Speakers included Graham Williamson from the NLP (who unveiled a new leaflet and poster on the issue), Lee Holmes from the PDP and Jamie and Emma from other NOTA groups.

Guest speakers promote the NOTA campaign

Graham explained that the NLP supported electoral reform in general, including PR, Recall and NOTA. He believed that all such reforms would improve turnouts but that getting NOTA on the Statute books is more possible at the present time.

Jamie explained why NOTA was a positive move and whilst UK politics was restricted was absolutely necessary to reengage the voter. Turnouts had been consistently falling and were already far too low for elected representatives to claim genuine legitimacy.
Emma looked at the mechanics of introducing NOTA and the implications i.e. if it were the highest vote in a constituency. She explained that NOTA was already on the ballot paper in two US states.
Lee explained why he had left the Conservatives, finding them run by a money orientated elite that only paid lip service to its membership. He saw parallels with successive governments attitudes towards the voter. An earlier comment that an MP had stated that one vote was legitimacy enough typified the disconnect such people had with the common man. A NOTA vote would be a rude awaking for many ‘professional’ politicians. Attendees joined in a Q&A session and discussion about how the campaign could be moved forward. The idea of a logo and text endorsement being offered to all candidates was proposed.
All agreed it was a very productive meeting, in a prestige location, and everyone hoped to meet again soon.
