EP elections – Self-Determination for All!

Let it be clear that the NLP’s intention in standing a list in London at the forthcoming European Parliamentary elections is to showcase the many self-determinist struggles around the globe and in Britain’s moral responsibility to put right a/their wrong. Of course statistically it is possible that one or even two candidates may be elected, but win or lose the mere fact of standing will be a victory!

It will also change the dynamics of the British politics in a number of ways.

Firstly, SD Diasporas will no longer be restricted to lobbying the establishment parties for the crumbs off their table but will highlight their growing electoral strength and thus a vote that can no longer be taken for granted, especially by those who don’t believe in self-determination.

Secondly, almost as an unintended consequence, many of these voters will be participating in our electoral system for the first time. They, and indeed other ‘minority’ communities, have up to now, beyond certain areas at certain times, avoided engaging in British state politics. The system, undeserving and corrupt as it is, should welcome an infusion of new blood.

It will certainly be an interesting as well as an historic campaign but don’t just be a spectator of history help make it with us too!

Issue 2 Of Caledonian Voice Due Soon!

National Liberals are anti-EU but not anti-European. We advocate a Europe of free peoples and nations – not a Europe of bankers and super-rich elites!

ISSUE 2 of Caledonian Voice (CV2) should be out in a couple of weeks. The voice of the National Liberal Party in Scotland will note that this year voters will face two historic elections. Late May sees the European elections. “Here we have to elect six Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) to look after the interests of nearly four million voters in Scotland.” And in mid September, the Scottish Referendum will decide on whether or not Scotland should break away from the rest of the United Kingdom.

It’s probably no exaggeration to say that the votes cast in May and September will effectively determine Scotland’s destiny as a nation. Issue 1 of Caledonian Voice looked at the Scottish Referendum. CV2 will look at the forthcoming European elections and examine what our attitude – as National Liberals – should be to them.

It notes that National Liberals are not anti-European. However, we are very definitely anti-EU.” It describes the EU as increasingly totalitarian bureaucratic regime” that employs a form of central planning “very similar to that employed by the old Soviet Union.” CV2 is also highly critical of the EU policy of allowing the ‘free movement of capital and labour’ between EU member states.

Instead of a Europe of bankers and super-rich elites, CV2 calls for a Europe of free peoples and nations. It advocates – at the very least – a re-negotiation of our position in Europe with a focus on Scotland regaining control of its sovereignty, political powers and economy.”

Spot the Difference!
On the 2nd February 1933 the newly formed Liberal National party defeated the Liberal Party (the party they split from) in their first electoral contest (a by-election in the Scottish parliamentary seat of East Fife). In commemoration of this victory (for a patriotic & pragmatist liberalism), today’s NLP have produced a leaflet entitled ‘National Liberals vs Liberal Democrats: Spot the Difference!’

Although both parties share a traditional belief in protecting civil liberties it points out some of the differences between the two parties: National Sovereignty (the LD’s happy to sign up to a United States of Europe), Globalisation (the LD’s are happy to accept the mass movement of capital or labour in the interests of big business) & State intervention (both parties oppose too much state control but the NLP believes the state can play an important role in protecting the vulnerable sections of society and key sectors of the economy such as the self-employed and small traders).

Although today’s NLP has more in common with the progressive wing of the old Liberal Nationals it is important to highlight that liberalism is not purely represented by the Liberal Democrats and that indeed National Liberalism reflects the true and original liberalism, being patriotic, libertarian and progressive. The South Western National Liberal Party is sponsoring the leaflet. 100 copies of the leaflet can be obtained by sending £3 to the NLP, PO Box 4217, Hornchurch, Essex RM12 4PJ.

New Horizon 3 NOW OUT!

The latest issue (3) of the NLP’s ideological magazine New Horizon is now out!
The lead article is entitled ‘Where is Britain’s Obama?’, not so much concerning his policies but on his ability to attract mass support across racial and ethnic lines, something hitherto not (yet) possible in the UK. It concludes that such a successful ‘ethnic’ leader is most likely to stem from within the ‘self-determinist’ community. Other articles include examples of non-socialist trade unionism, economics, philosophy, and ‘national self-determination’. Feedback and new writers always welcome!
