New member to the National Council

We are delighted to welcome Sockalingam Yogalingam to the party’s ruling National Council. ‘Yogi’ is committed to the cause of self-determination and human rights and was one of the NLP’s London candidates in the recent European elections.

.

An estate agent from Harrow, London but originally born in Punguducativu, in northern Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), he came to the UK as a political asylum seeker in 1986. He is a committed to campaigning for peace, justice and self-determination for his brethren on that blighted Island and is an active Member of Parliament of the Transnational Government of Tamil Eelam (TGTE) www.tgte.org and ACT NOW and supports boycotting activities and genocide witness programmes.

With fellow NC members Graham Williamson and Jagdeesh Singh, he was a founding member of the self-determinist pressure group Nations without States and was a candidate for the NLP in the London region at the European elections (2014).

He was deeply moved by the genocide experienced by Tamils in 2009 in Sri Lanka and the event convinced him of the need to uphold human rights everywhere at all times.

National Liberal Debate 13 – Should We Bring Back The Death Penalty? Have Your Say!
.

Leftist Bob Crow supported the death penalty whilst Tory Enoch Powell opposed it. Where do you stand?

THE MANY problems faced by Britain – whether economic or social – are not going to be solved by screaming and shouting. Thus, the National Liberal Party is not interested in ‘hitting the headlines’ using the tired formula of macho–posturing and gesture politics. These problems will only be overcome by a combination of careful thought and action.

This means that we favour informed and reasoned debate. Here we concentrate on arguments, points of view and facts. We are not interested in personalities, prejudice or promoting self-interest.

The National Liberal Party seeks to build an organisation that encourages free speech and debate. To do this, we also attempt to take into consideration as many views as is possible in open debate. Thus, members and supporters are always encouraged to have their say.

We’re also interested in encouraging people to develop their debating skills. That’s why the NLP has introduced a new series of articles called Have Your Say! Whilst each subject will be announced on this web-site, they’ll be conducted in full on the National Liberals Facebook site, which can be found here:

https://www.facebook.com/groups/52739504313/

Before we start this debate we’d like to remind folks of our ground rules:

  • First of all, say what you think – but think what you say.

  • Secondly, just debate the issue(s) raised. There should be no personal attacks.

  • As previously noted, we’re simply not interested in personalities.

  • Please note that we may ask selected members and supporters to play ‘devil’s advocate’. Hopefully, this’ll help sharpen the debating skills of all involved!

  • Finally, it should be remembered that all of the views expressed in Have Your Say! are personal and should not be taken to be the official view of the NLP itself.

Our latest question is simple – should we bring back the death penalty?  In part, this question is prompted by growing demands to ‘bring back hanging’ for the likes of the Michael Adebolajo and Michael Adebowale (who killed Fusilier Drummer Lee Rigby in May 2013) and those involved in the sexual abuse of children.

Our question is also prompted by the fact that it is a subject that can transcend the traditional ‘left/right’ divide.  Altough advocating the death penalty is often seen as a ‘right wing’ cause, the prominent Lenninist Bob Crow supported this position whilst arch-Tory Enoch Powell was firmly opposed.  It’s also probably true to say that the vast majority of those who would descibe themselves as ‘working-class’ would support capital punishment.

With this in mind, what’s your view?  Should the death penalty be brought back – if so, on what grounds?  If you’re opposed to hanging, how would you deal with murderers, drug dealers and child molesters?

Let us know your views – simply check out the debate at Facebook/National Liberals today!

Gaza to Mount Sinjar
The humanitarian disasters that have befallen the Middle East of late, namely the religious persecutions of non-Muslim minorities in Iraq and the ‘siege’ of Gaza, have both a human and political dimension. Human, in that the vast majority of those suffering are innocent and passive citizens caught up in other people’s agendas and political, in that the disasters are a consequence of, if not an aim of, the perpetrators, whether it be the Sunni fundamentalist ISIS or the Israeli army.
.
Being a political organisation we cannot sit idly by without comment or action for these disasters are rooted in politics e.g. the problem of extreme religious fervour (presently amongst the Muslim faith) exacerbated by Western political intervention and the failure of the world, in particular the US, to force the Israeli’s and Palestinians to embrace the ‘Two-state’ solution. Therefore, our self-determinist pressure group Nations without States will be supporting a conference on the plight of the Yazidi Kurds this Sunday.
.
In the meantime our resident Poet Jason Jesuthasan reflects upon the present disasters……………..
.
Gaza to Mount Sinjar
.
Oh the mother of all grief,
What a curse to befall you often,
Burdened with endless strife,
Humanity on knees, sorrow laden;
Pitiless politics constant to unleash
Death, destruction and tearful fear;
Justice silent for terror to spread horror,
As the hills of Gaza to Mount Sinjar
Deafeningly echo the cries of infants,
Orphaned and tummies full of hunger,
Beg they and cry for justice from the mountains
.
Justice prisoner of power! But for what?
For scraps of war! Wailing and grief
Of death-ridden valleys deafening thought
Of just minds; before the dust settles on brief
Lull on fire, new frontiers open for killing
The innocent; Human dignity lies bleeding
On the ground while heads of empires,
Old and new mull over on blazing doom-fire;
All the while death prowls seeking new preys,
Cries of the living shake the vastness of skies,
Oh the mother of all grief, where do we bury this shame?
.

National Liberalism worldwide

.

Whilst the NLP focuses on UK issues we believe the philosophy of National Liberalism to be universal and its tenets to be applicable to any country, whether it be to support Direct Democracy, Self-determination or individual liberties.
.
We have therefore created an Overseas Dept. directly responsible to the party’s ruling National Council and composed of Overseas Representatives throughout the Globe’s Continents reporting to a UK based Overseas Liaison Officer.
.
.
Its first task is to develop a Partnership Agreement recently brokered with the NLP (Lebanon). The latter was originally established by the then President Camille Chamoun in 1958. The say that ‘”The party has adopted a hardline in regard to the preservation of Lebanese independence (national), and to the safeguard of the distinctive liberal practices in Lebanon with respect to freedom of expression, opinion and religious freedoms and Human Rights principles”
.
The purpose of the partnership is political cooperation, an international dialogue between Lebanon and the UK and, ultimately, the creation of a Global National Liberal Council. With the latter in mind we shall also be hosting an international conference for various overseas individual activists looking to develop an NLP and/or Nations without States in their own countries.
.
If you are based outside the UK or a member of a Diaspora and want to get involved please contact us at natliberal@aol.com.

The Isle Of Wight Voice Says People Before Profit – Hands Off The NHS

.

.

A KEY part of the National Liberal Party’s overall strategy is to build the infrastructure of an alternative mass media of news, information and entertainment.

To date, the NLP has launced several national, regional and local publications. Some have been e-publications whilst others have been hard copies. These include Liberty & Nation, Caledonian Voice, English Voice, Cuffley, Courier, Kent Voice, the Isle of Wight Voice and St. Andrews Voice.

In time, we aim to add to these publications. We also hope to build a supporting infrastructure around each publication – including supporters and debating groups as well as Social Media sites like Facebook and Twitter. Building such an infrastructure is slow and detailed work.

Another area of support for our publications is the production of regular e-posters. Such e-posters are known as visual sound bites.  In this age of the ‘micro-second media’ they represent a very useful way of viralling our message out.

The latest NLP publication to produce its own e-poster is the Isle of Wight Voice – IoWV. Its e-poster is a ‘bread and butter’ one and campaigns in support of the NHS. The IoWV is concerned that the Tories (in particular) view the NHS as a mere business commodity, where ‘unprofitable’ sections are done away with – whilst the rest is sold off to the highest bidder.

The IoWV feels that such a move would be immoral and unjust. It feels that the NHS should be kept as a publicly funded, publicly delivered, and publicly accountable integrated healthcare system. Thus the IoWV is opposed to both the creeping privatisation of the NHS and the introduction of Private Finance Initiatives (PFI).

The NHS is not perfect – far from it – and the IoWV acknowledges this. However, any imperfections should be ironed out by management and staff. Privatisation and PFI are not the way forward. The health of folks living on the island should come first – not the profit margins of greedy capitalists!

Help Our Front-Line Activists!

Front and back of the joint NLP/NwS leaflet promoting self-determination. Our front-line activists want to distribute them on a nationwide basis. Can you help?

AS PART of a joint campaign in support of self-determination, front-line activists of both the National Liberal Party and Nations without States are planning a massive leaflet distribution campaign.

The distribution of our double-sided full-colour glossy leaflet will represent a massive step forward for our self-determination campaign.  In May we put out one million leaflets for our Euro-Election campaign.  This was just in London where we stood eight brave candidates on a Self-Determination For All! ticket.  This time we want to promote our positive message of self-determination – based on the principles of national freedom and social justice – on a nationwide basis.

We want to distribute our new leaflets both on a door-to-door basis and at demonstrations, meetings and pickets.  Our front-line activists are raring to go.  Can you help them?

We want to print as many leaflets as possible.  To do this we need money – and lots of it!  We’re asking for as many folks as possible to make a donation (large or small) so that we can really promote the concept of self-determination.  Will you help us make self-determination the ‘hot topic’ in British politics?

Both the National Council of the National Liberal Party and the Organising Committee of Nations without States have given a cast iron guarantee that all donations generated via this appeal will be spent on producing as many leaflets as possible.

Heres how you can support the campaign for self-determination:

• Make a direct donation to our bank account: Bank of Scotland – National Liberal Party – 12-11-03 – 06186181

• Pay via our web-site: http://nationalliberal.org/the-party-organisation/donate

Send a cheque or Postal Order to NLP, PO Box 4217, Hornchurch, Essex, RM12 4PX, England.
