Liberal Future: Carmarthenshire, Denbighshire & Flintshire Youth Say … Ignore The Establishment Media Narrative – BreXit Now!

.
.
“ONCE MORE let me remind you what fascism is. It need not wear a brown shirt or a green shirt – it may even wear a dress shirt. Fascism begins the moment a ruling class, fearing the people may use their political democracy to gain economic democracy, begins to destroy political democracy in order to retain its power of exploitation and special privilege.”

Tommy Douglas (1904 – 1986), Premier of Saskatchewan and the leader of the Canadian New Democratic Party.

WELCOME to the latest in our series of Liberal Future BreXit Now! articles.   This one’s slightly different from the rest as it doesn’t look at the Brexit result itself.  Instead it examines the question of ‘narrative control’.

Eagle-eyed readers will know that our friends and comrades at Nations without States recently hosted a debate about US imperialism – nationalliberal.org/from-the-liberty-wall-–-nations-without-debate-4-–-how-do-we-stop-us-imperialism – which was based on an article by non-conformist and ‘rogue journalist’, Caitlin Johnstone.  Her article,  America’s Venezuela Strategy: Coup By SheerNarrative Control specifically looked at how the US Military-Industrial Complex (MIC) was meddling in the internal affairs of a sovereign country, Venezuela.  To put it bluntly, they were trying to overthrow the democratically elected President – Nicolás Maduro Morosand promote their asset – Juan Guaidóvia a war of words.  Basically, they were working on the principle that if you repeat a lie so many times it eventually becomes the ‘truth’.

So what has this got to do with Brexit and the youth of Carmarthenshire, Denbighshire & Flintshire?

The simple answer is that the Remainer British establishment is trying to control the Brexit narrative in the same way the US establishment is trying to control the Venezuelan narrative.  And that’s by lying through their teeth!

So let’s look at the Brexit narrative in a little more detail.  There’s several strands to the Remainer strategy – but one of the main ones appears to be the attempt to ‘demonise’ those who voted for Brexit, and, in turn, the vote itself.

We’ve lost count of the number of times those who voted for Brexit have been described as being ‘populist’, ‘nazi’, ‘fascist’ or being from the  ‘extreme right-wing.’  In addition to this, those who voted for freedom are ‘racists’ and ‘little Englanders’ who spend their days dreaming of the long ‘lost days of the British Empire’.  In addition to this, Leave voters are violently opposed to LGBT folks and wish to curtail their rights to same-sex marriage and so on.

Given the fact that nearly 17.5 million people voted for independence from the EU, we think that these descriptions of Brexit supporters are – to say the very least – a wild generalisation!

Does anyone in Carmarthenshire, Denbighshire or Flintshire – or anywhere else in Wales for that matter – fit exactly into each of the above boxes?  In fact, here in Wales (which saw a massive 71.7% turnout) 854,572 people voted to leave the EU.  This represented 52.5% of the vote.  (Indeed, as this Buzz Feed News report notes https://www.buzzfeed.com/jamesball/heres-who-voted-for-brexit-and-who-didnt it’s believed that around a third of Plaid Cymru voters backed leave.)

In an ideal world, these allegations relating to Brexit supporters are so wild that they would, to coin a phrase, simply be laughed out of court.  They’re not evidence-led and the establishment is trying to control the narrative using a combination of speculation, disdain and simple mischief making.  As we noted earlier, this is in order to ‘demonise’ those who voted for Brexit, and, in turn, the vote itself.

In short, the establishment believes that if you throw enough mud, some of it will stick.  In an era of widespread fake news and post-truth journalism, those of us who value truth and freedom have a duty to call these lies out.  We have a moral duty to answer their lies with our truth – no matter how hard that may be.  Unfortunately, many people these days don’t bother to do their own independent research – or they’re just happy to go with the flow – so they just absorb the establishment narrative.  Sadly, this particularly applies to our youth.

So let’s look in a little more detail at some of the wild claims being made about those who voted for Brexit.

As we noted earlier, one of the most consistent claims is that Brexit supporters are all effectively ‘populists’, ‘nazis’, ‘fascists’ or from the ‘extreme right-wing’.  Liberal Future notes that, when these words are slung around, the person who uses them makes absolutely no attempt to define what actually constitutes a ‘populist’, ‘nazi’, ‘facscist’ or someone from the ‘extreme right-wing’.  These are all tired, lazy stereotypes – indeed such descriptions have really lost all meaning and are simply used to smear people and also to avoid any meaningful political debate.  Neither is there any attempt to ‘grade’ viewpoints – for instance, at what point does someone cease to be politically ‘right-wing’ and suddenly becomes ‘extreme right-wing’?

We also feel that if anyone actually defined themselves as a ‘nazi’ or ‘fascist’, they would have voted in favour of the UK remaining in the European Union.  This is because both ideologies are based on both the centralisation of power and rule by diktat – and that’s what the EU is all about.
With the above in mind, Liberal Future ironically notes that it was Sir Oswald Mosley (the former leader of the British Union of Fascists & National Socialists) was one of the first people to campaign for a European Union after WWII.  This was made clear in his 1958 book Europe: Faith & Plan http://www.freepdf.info/index.php?post%2FMosley-Oswald-Europe-Faith-and-plan&fbclid=IwAR34zLfz623LrBYOm3NEVZR1t_CDmkHqTkokjgqN1AmtAM1IeY-SrqZ2xBY – which called for the ‘complete Union of Europe with European Government’.  Some of his (post war) Union Movement supporters still promote this idea via blogs – see here: https://europeanaction.blogspot.com/2011/12/great-europe.html?fbclid=IwAR1SGylRlAD-J_E0M_AqxyooxEBPB-7QHMJAL0b0h9RZKvZHZSLnG0lG9AQ and here: https://nationrevisited.blogspot.com/?fbclid=IwAR3ZjQ79wFy90o7OLsHW4BbC_50Xw7QVdBlG51IwlUR-8nq0y6wNr-zy4NI

It seems the establishment has conveniently overlooked this aspect of political history!  It’ also seems to have completely ignored the long line of socialists (of various hues) who have opposed the creation of a European Superstate, right from its earliest days.  They include the late Tony Benn, Bob Crowe and Peter Shore.  Frank Field, George Galloway, Kate Hoey, Dennis Skinner and Gisela Stuart are all from the left – and all support Brexit.  Even Jeremy Corbyn – until his mysterious and seemingly overnight ‘conversion’ – was opposed to the EU!

It also seems that – in this rush to demonise ‘extreme right-wing’ Brexit supporters – the Lexit campaign (‘Left Exit’ from the EU) has been airbrushed out of recent political history.  It’s a matter of public record that many British leftist groups support a position of independence from the EU.  They include, in no particular order, the Communist Party of Britain, the Communist Party of Britain Marxist Leninist, the Socialist Labour Party, the Socialist Party, the Socialist Workers Party and the organisation Trade Unions Against the EU.

The establishment narrative also seems to have forgotten that National Liberals, Social Democrats, Liberals, independents and other groups that don’t fit into the convenient ‘extreme right wing’ label also supported Brexit

Liberal Future concedes that those on the national capitalist right like Nigel Farage and Boris Johnson received their fair share of publicity during the EU Referendum campaign.  However, it’s simply not true that the Brexit vote wholly represented an expression of the ‘extreme right-wing’.  Suffice to say, that opposition to the EU came from across the political divide and totally transcended the traditional left/right divide – and this is as true in Carmarthenshire, Denbighshire or Flintshire as it is anywhere else.

In future BreXit Now! articles we’ll examine – and unpick – more of this establishment narrative.  We’ll also look at ways that Liberal Future hopes to counteract the establishment mass media by building its own youth-orientated alternative mass media.

In the meantime, keep an eye out for the National Liberal Party’s results analysis of today’s EU election results.  Ironically, if we lived in a true democracy we wouldn’t have needed to hold this election as we’d be free of the EU by now!  That said, we’d be particularly interested to see how Plaid Cymru get on – as everyone knows, PC want us to remain in the EU, whilst the Welsh electorate doesn’t.  The NLP results analysis will appear on this web-site www.nationalliberal.org as well as on Facebook/National Liberals and Facebook/National Liberal Party and Twitter @NationalLiberal

From The Liberty Wall – National Liberal Trade Unionists – Trade Unionists Against Mass Immigration (Part 3)

THIS IS the third part of a series entitled Trade Unionists Against Mass Immigration. It should be read directly on from part 1 http://nationalliberal.org/from-the-liberty-wall-–-national-liberal-trade-unionists-–-trade-unionists-against-mass-immigration-part-1 and part 2 http://nationalliberal.org/from-the-liberty-wall-–-national-liberal-trade-unionists-–-trade-unionists-against-mass-immigration-part-2 Originally called The Left Case Against Open Borders – https://americanaffairsjournal.org/2018/11/the-left-case-against-open-borders/– it was written by Angela Nagle for American Affairs, a ‘quarterly journal of public policy and political thought.’ Angela Nagle is a graduate from Dublin City University (DCU) in Éire.

This part of the series examines the human cost of globalisation. Here, only a select few gain from a system which allows industry to ‘up sticks’ and chase – and exploit – the lowest wages across Europe and elsewhere. At the same time, poorly paid workers (in Europe it would be Eastern Europeans) understandably move to countries that pay a better wage. Such movement places enormous strains upon local services and has the potential to stir up trouble between indigenous and immigrant workers. Capitalists are more than happy with the resulting ‘race to the bottom’ as wages can be slashed and normal working practices shelved.

As National Liberal Trade Unionists our ideas go way beyond the ideological straightjackets of ‘left’ and ‘right’. Therefore, it comes as welcome news that Angela Nagle isn’t the only ‘leftist’ who realises the dangers posed by open borders. Dennis Skinner, Labour MP for Bolsover (Derbyshire), Frank Field, independent MP for Birkenhead and Paul Embery, Regional Secretary of the Fire Brigades Union in London, have all warned of its potential dangers.

The NLTU feels that Nagle, Skinner, Field and Embery all understand that globalism – with its open borders and mass immigration – has the capacity to slash wages and threaten hard earned terms and conditions of employment (including many important health and safety issues) brought about by years of hard collective bargaining. And as this report indicates – https://highline.huffingtonpost.com/articles/en/the-21st-century-gold-rush-refugees/#/niger – criminal elements are getting in on the act, and are making serious money out of the desperation and misery of others.

The NLTU might not agree with everything Nagle writes. However, in the spirit of comradeship, free speech and open debate, we feature her article below. We invite our readers to share their thoughts when this article is reproduced of the NLTU Facebook site – https://www.facebook.com/groups/277840098977231/ – and the NLP Facebook site – https://www.facebook.com/NationalLiberalParty/ It goes without saying that there are no official links between Angela Nagle, American Affairs, the NLTU and the National Liberal Party. Please note that the NLTU has kept the original US spelling and phrases as they are.

.
The Left Case Against Open Borders – By Angela Nagle (Part 3)

,
The Human Cost of Globalization

Angela Nagle (left) notes that one of the effects of globalisation is to ‘destroy a region’s economy, which in turn leads to mass emigration from that area, further eroding the potential of the origin country while depressing wages for the lowest paid workers in the destination country.’ Dennis Skinner (right) made a similar point - in a European context - when he noted “When I hear Tories and the purple-faced UKIP go on now about Poles, Romanians and Bulgarians coming to Britain to work, I think back and remember what Mrs Thatcher did. She signed the 1986 Single European Act to create the free market of people. She was championing the eastwards expansion of the European Union into the former Soviet satellites. She wanted the EU to embrace that part of the world to roll back the Iron Curtain, and stick it to Mikhail Gorbachev and Communists. The Single Market was designed deliberately to allow employees to transfer cheap labour across national borders. It wasn’t principally about letting workers decide where they’d look for jobs. That’s a by-product. The Single Market’s main aim was to supply cut-price workers to capitalism. A capitalism with an insatiable appetite for the dozen-a-penny workers she created by stripping away employment rights, by shackling trade unions. The problems we wrestle with today can be traced back to her door.”

.
Advocates of open borders often overlook the costs of mass migration for developing countries. Indeed, globalization often creates a vicious cycle: liberalized trade policies destroy a region’s economy, which in turn leads to mass emigration from that area, further eroding the potential of the origin country while depressing wages for the lowest paid workers in the destination country. One of the major causes of labor migration from Mexico to the United States has been the economic and social devastation caused by the North American Free Trade Agreement (nafta). Nafta forced Mexican farmers to compete with U.S. agriculture, with disastrous consequences for Mexico. Mexican imports doubled, and Mexico lost thousands of pig farms and corn growers to U.S. competition. When coffee prices fell below the cost of production, nafta prohibited state intervention to keep growers afloat. Additionally, U.S. companies were allowed to buy infrastructure in Mexico, including, for example, the country’s main north-south rail line. The railroad then discontinued passenger service, resulting in the decimation of the rail workforce after a wildcat strike was crushed. By 2002, Mexican wages had dropped by 22 percent, even though worker productivity increased by 45 percent (1). In regions like Oaxaca, emigration devastated local economies and communities, as men emigrated to work in America’s farm labor force and slaughterhouses, leaving behind women, children, and the elderly.

And what about the significant skilled and white-collar migrant workforce? Despite the rhetoric about “shithole countries” or nations “not sending their best,” the toll of the migration brain drain on developing economies has been enormous. According to the Census Bureau’s figures for 2017, about 45 percent of migrants who have arrived in the United States since 2010 are college educated (2). Developing countries are struggling to retain their skilled and professional citizens, often trained at great public cost, because the largest and wealthiest economies that dominate the global market have the wealth to snap them up. Today, Mexico also ranks as one of the world’s biggest exporters of educated professionals, and its economy consequently suffers from a persistent “qualified employment deficit.” This developmental injustice is certainly not limited to Mexico. According to Foreign Policy magazine, “There are more Ethiopian physicians practicing in Chicago today than in all of Ethiopia, a country of 80 million.” (3). It is not difficult to see why the political and economic elites of the world’s richest countries would want the world to “send their best,” regardless of the consequences for the rest of the world. But why is the moralizing, pro-open borders Left providing a humanitarian face for this naked self-interest?

According to the best analysis of capital flows and global wealth today, globalization is enriching the wealthiest people in the wealthiest countries at the expense of the poorest, not the other way around. Some have called it “aid in reverse.” Billions in debt interest payments move from Africa to the large banks in London and New York. Vast private wealth is generated in extractive commodity industries and through labor arbitrage every year, and repatriated back to the wealthy nations where the multinational corporations are based. Trillions of dollars in capital flight occurs because international corporations take advantage of tax havens and secrecy jurisdictions, made possible by the World Trade Organization’s liberalization of “trade inefficient” invoicing regulations and other policies (4).

Global wealth inequality is the primary push factor driving mass migration, and the globalization of capital cannot be separated from this matter. There is also the pull factor of exploitative employers in the United States who seek to profit from nonunionized, low-wage workers in sectors like agriculture as well as through the importation of a large white-collar workforce already trained in other countries. The net result is an estimated population of eleven million people living in the United States illegally.
