TOWARDS the middle of June, Sinhalese supporters of the Sri Lankan cricket team attacked Tamils outside the Oval Cricket Ground in South London. Why?

The Tamils in London were peacefully protesting against the atrocities committed by the Sri Lankan military against their fellow Tamils. They were simply distributing leaflets, flying their flags and displaying banners.

Yet they faced intimidation and were both verbally and physically attacked. One of those attacked was Sockalingam Yogalingam, a member of the Nations without States (NwS) Organising Committee.

All self-determinists want is (literally) a small place on this earth to call their own. They simply want to live peacefully with their own folk – and others – in accordance with their customs, traditions and way of life.

However, as we’ve noted above, the opponents of self-determination can’t even debate in a civil and rational manner. They can only resort to violence.

With this in mind, this first NwS debate asks why do our oppressors hate the concept of self-determination? Following on from this, what is the mind set of these people and just what makes them tick? Are they natural-born bullies or are they secretly very insecure – and have to hide this insecurity by oppressing others? Or is there something deep within their psyche that makes them act this way?
