Issue 2 of the Isle of Wight Voice – for a workers’ MP on a workers’ wage!
EARLIER this month we announced that issue 2 of the Isle of Wight Voice would soon make an appearance. We’re glad to say that it’s now out and is available FREE from the National Liberal Party!

Like issue 1, this new issue takes the form of an interview with Glan Maney – the National Secretary of the National Liberal Party. Glen has extensive links on the island and hopes to return there to fight the next General Election on behalf of the NLP.

If elected, Glen says that he would remain close to the ordinary working people of the island and wouldn’t get ‘sucked in’ by the perks of the job:
“I promise that I will only take the average wage of a skilled worker. The rest of my parliamentary salary will go towards good causes that will benefit the people of the Isle of Wight. I would also only claim legitimate expenses, the rest again going to helping the island and its people.”
Glen believes that politicians earning way above the average wage are completely out of touch with ordinary working folks. “How can they understand the hopes and fears of someone living on benefits or the National Minimum Wage when they earn so much and live an all-expensespaid lifestyle?”
He says that it’s an absolute disgrace that – on top of their massive salary – politicians can legally claim expenses for second mortgages, food, household bills and so on. In contrast, Glen aims to be a workers’ MP on a workers’ wage!

American Imperialism … Is President Barack Obama as bad as George W Bush? Have Your Say!

THE MANY problems faced by Britain – whether economic or social – are not going to be solved by screaming and shouting.  Thus, the National Liberal Party is not interested in ‘hitting the headlines’ using the tired formula of macho–posturing and gesture politics.  These problems will only be overcome by a combination of careful thought and action.

This means that we favour informed and reasoned debate.  Here we concentrate on arguments, points of view and facts.  We are not interested in personalities, prejudice or promoting self-interest.

The National Liberal Party seeks to build an organisation that encourages free speech and debate.  To do this, we also attempt to take into consideration as many views as is possible in open debate.  Thus, members and supporters are always encouraged to have their say.

We’re also interested in encouraging people to develop their debating skills.  That’s why the NLP has introduced a new series of articles called Have Your Say! Whilst each subject will be announced on this web-site, they’ll be conducted in full on the National Liberals Facebook site, which can be found here: http://www.facebook.com/home.php#!/groups/52739504313/?fref=ts

Before we start our second debate we’d like to remind folks of our ground rules:

  • First of all, say what you think – but think what you say.
  • Secondly, just debate the issue(s) raised.  There should be no personal attacks.
  • As previously noted, we’re simply not interested in personalities.
  • Please note that we may ask selected members and supporters to play ‘devil’s advocate’.  Hopefully, this’ll help sharpen the debating skills of all involved!
  • Finally, it should be remembered that all of the views expressed in Have Your Say! are personal and should not be taken to be the official view of the NLP itself.

With all this in mind, this debate asks American Imperialism … Is President Barack Obama as bad as George W Bush?

Finally, we’d also like to encourage as many people as possible to propose subjects to be discussed in future.  As part of our libertarianism no subject is taboo.

From The Liberty Wall – National Liberal Trade Unionists – Starting to Organise!
RECENTLY a few invited members and supporters of the National Liberal Party met to discuss the next steps in organising the National Liberal Trade Unionist movement.

The NLTU is sponsored by the National Liberal Party and seeks to promote a sensible non-socialist trade unionism.” Instead of promoting political or class warfare, the NLTU supports the “principles of liberty (putting the individual member first) and patriotism (defending workers from globalisation), and be liberal (increasing employee share ownership) and economic (focusing activity in the workplace) in practice.”

The three main speakers at the planning meeting were David Kerr, Glen Nicklasson and Graham Williamson. Devon-based Mr. Nicklasson is both Chairman of the NLTU and a active trade unionist. Belfast man Mr. Kerr is a member of NLPs Steering Committee and an active trade unionist and community worker whilst Mr. Williamson is also a trade unionist, community worker and human rights campaigner.

The meeting covered six main topics:

a) The production of educational booklets tracing the history of Liberal trade unionism in Britain and mainland Europe.

b) The production of an A4 broadsheet – provisionally entitled Liberal Worker – and A5 leaflets.

c) Producing more articles looking at the work of the NLTU.

d) To step up recruitment of members

e) To co-operate with other Liberal (non-socialist) trade unionists and other Liberal and Libertarian trade unions.

f) To create a 10 point ‘policy statement.’

We’ll feature more information about the progress of the National Liberal Trade Unionists in due course. In the meantime, check out the NLTU Facebook site here: http://www.facebook.com/groups/277840098977231#!/groups/277840098977231/
