Christmas 2014 – Support Your Local Shops!

.
YES it’s that time of year again – Christmas is coming! But in your haste to do the shopping, don’t forget the local shops and businesses in your area. Give them an early Christmas present by shopping locally today.

The National Liberal Party knows that times are hard and price considerations are obviously very important, but many small shops depend on their Christmas trade to see them through much of the following year. At present, many shopkeepers are hit hard by the recession which was brought on by ‘casino capitalism’ – a mixture of greed and mistakes made by the politicians, bankers, ‘fat cats’ and speculators. Shopkeepers are also hit hard by high interest rates and the criminal bank debt-system.

The shopkeeper, as a self-employed businessman or woman, plays a vital role in the local economy. (And don’t forget that these small shops collectively employ hundreds of thousands of workers throughout the length and breadth of Britain). Local shops are not only important for the elderly and young mothers, but are part of the glue that helps to maintain community spirit – a place to bump into friends, neighbours and relatives.

If we don’t support our local shops and businesses today, we may loose them forever. Then people will have no other choice to travel directly into the nearest city or town centre for the smallest of items. This may be ok if you have your own transport and are fit and healthy. However, the elderly or young mothers wouldn’t really look forward to beating a path through the massive Saturday shopping crowds found in our large towns and cities.

The message is clear. For the community spirit to survive and prosper, we must give local shops as much trade as possible. The National Liberal Party says support your local shops, shopkeepers and shop workers. Shop locally this Christmas!

Think Globally – Act Locally!
.
WHEN it comes to politics, the exact origin of the phrase “Think globally – act locally” has been disputed. However, what is not in dispute is the validity of the slogan.

But with the recent production and distribution of one new leaflet – and the continued distribution of an existing leaflet – the National Liberal Party has took this famous slogan to a new level!

When it comes to thinking globally, our new leaflet deals with self-determination and has been jointly produced by the National Liberal Party and Nations without States. It states the importance of self-determination:

“Self-Determination is a universal human right! It’s the right to determine one’s own destiny. This includes the right of nations and peoples to choose their own political status as well as their own form of economic, cultural and social development. This choice should always be put to a referendum.”

The leaflet also notes that as well as supporting national self-Determination, the NLP supports political self-Determination. Thus we ““support civil and religious liberties for all and would like to introduce see Swiss-style referendums, citizens’ initiatives and recall. All elected representatives should serve the people – not the other way around!”

And when it comes to acting locally, the National Liberal Party is leading the way in its support for local shops, businesses and the self-employed!

Our ‘Shop Local’ campaign has been running for a very long time now but we’ll soon be moving up a gear with a new national leaflet and poster. However, we’ve still got a few of our very popular Stand & Deliver! Leaflets left.

Stand & Deliver! refers to the way that the banks rob shoppers and shop holders alike. It argues that to kick-start the economy Britain needs to revive its local shopping areas:

“To do this the banks should provide interest-free loans to local shops, small businesses and the self-employed. They must be interest-free loans because normally the banks just create ‘credit’ out of nothing and then charges interest on this! This means that you pay much, much, more back to the bank than you actually get from them.”

If you agree with our opposition to the fraudulent banking system – and you support local shops, businesses and the self-employed – then help us promote our message by distributing as many of our Stand & Deliver! leaflets as possible!

• THINK GLOBALLY! 100 copies of the new NLP/NwS self-determination leaflet costs just £5.00. Distribute them to any friends, family or workmates who’re interested in self-determination.

• ACT LOCALLY! 100 copies of the NLP Stand & Deliver! leaflet costs just £5.00. Distribute them to your neighbours and local shop keepers. Support local shops, businesses and the self-employed!

Liberal Future Debate 1 – Should We Lower The Voting Age Throughout the UK?

In September’s Scottish Referendum 16 and 17 year olds were allowed to vote for the first time. Liberal Future asks: Should we lower the voting age throughout the UK?

LIBERAL FUTURE – the youth wing of the National Liberal Party – found September’s Scottish Referendum fascinating for two main reasons.

Firstly, it gave the people of Scotland the opportunity to vote on their constitutional position within the United Kingdom. The referendum – for all of its faults – at least enabled the electorate to have something of a say in the future direction of Scotland. How many other nations have been allowed this freedom?

And secondly, the voting age for the referendum was lowered 16. This was remarkable because under current legislation, UK voters must be 18 or over. At the moment it’s unclear if the lowering of the voting age in Scotland was simply a ‘one off’ – or maybe some form of catalyst which sees it being extended to all elections.

However what is clear is that the lowering of the voting age (for the Scottish Referendum) meant that thousands of youngsters were politically engaged for the first time. Indeed, according to a BBC report – http://www.bbc.co.uk/newsbeat/29279384 of the 3.6 million Scottish voters who turned out, more than 100,000 were 16 to 17-year-olds. However, it could be argued that this healthy turn out by youngsters was due to the ‘novelty factor’ of being allowed to vote for the first time rather than a real interest in the democratic process.

Liberal Future recognises that there are many pros and cons attached to lowering the voting age.

For instance, youngsters can be easily swayed by ‘celebs’ and the – seemingly – all pervading influence and power of modern Politically Correct pop culture. They generally also lack any real understanding or experience of the ‘real’ world. However, 16 and 17-year-olds can be incrediably idealistic and are not as likely to be open to electoral bribes from the establishment parties. And allowing youngsters to vote would also allow many more people to take part in the democratic process.

With all of this in mind, this first Liberal Future debate asks: Should we lower the voting age throughout the UK?
