The collapse of Carillion could see 43,000 out of work.
THE NLTU – National Liberal Trade Unionists – believes that the government must act immediately to stop thousands of workers being thrown onto the scrapheap in the wake of the collapse of Carillion.
Carillion, the construction and outsourcing firm, is based in Wolverhampton, in the West Midlands. It employs 43,000 staff and is responsible for crucial services in schools, hospitals and prisons. It collapsed under a debt of £900m and a £580m pensions deficit.
According to the Guardian ‘The company derives £1.7bn – about a third of its revenue – from public sector contracts and public private partnerships – https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2018/jan/13/private-public-sector-history-tangled-relationship These include providing school dinners, cleaning and catering at NHS hospitals, construction work on rail projects such as HS2 and maintaining 50,000 army base homes for the Ministry of Defence.’
However, the NLTU believes that the most important thing that needs to happen (in the short-term) is for the government to immediately step in to stabilise the situation.
Carillion should be nationalised. This would protect thousands of jobs and keep badly needed infracture projects going. We cannot see the point in throwing some highly skilled workers onto the scrap heap. Indeed, the NLTU feels that this policy is absolutely criminal.
Once jobs have been secured we can look at the various options available. As Distributists, the NLTUs preference would be to create a series of workers co-operatives – where owners work and workers own. This would literally put the workforce in charge of their own destiny.
As we mentioned earlier, we can then look into who awarded contracts to Carillion – and why. We must also question the whole role of PFI as we feel that a national bank should simply create the money required for infrastructure projects, such as building new health centres, hospitals and schools. But before all that, immediate government action is required to save all 43,000 Carillion jobs.

FELLOW TRADE UNIONISTS who read our articles will know that the NLTU – National Liberal Trade Unionists – regularly reproduce and echo the views of Dr Max Pemberton. Dr Pemberton is a London-based NHS psychiatrist, journalist and writer.
.
Like Dr Pemberton, the NLTU is totally opposed to the NHS being run as a business. Nor should it be seen as a cash cow for Big Pharma or various trans-national corporations. We believe that the NHS should remain a public service – and not run for private profit. Indeed, we wonder what sort of society could think about (yet alone tolerate) making money out of the illness and misery of other people.
.
With this in mind we reprint an another article by Dr Pemberton – which appeared in a copy of the Daily Mail in late August of last year. Once again, we’d like to stress that our sole intention is to stimulate mature debate and it goes without saying that there are no official links between the NLTU, Dr Pemberton or the Daily Mail.

Put NHS Bosses’ Pay On The Line
.

I DON’T believe I am alone in being outraged at news that health trusts are still paying eye-watering amounts of money to senior managers.
.
Latest figures show that some temporary managers brought in to try to save failing clinical commissioning groups are on rates equal to £200,000 a year – and some are on more than £300,000. What on earth is gong on?
.
Despite government ministers saying they will clamp down on this kind of largess, the NHS claims it needs to pay these kinds of wages to be competitive and attract the best candidates.
.
Rubbish. Most of these managers that I have encountered are mediocre at best.
.
And the fact that out of 32 failing clinical commissioning groups that hired them, just three are deemed to be no longer failing, suggests they aren’t worth the money.
.
I don’t agree with the NHS being run like a business, but this is the way it seems to be going. It therefore seems to make sense to me that – just as happens in the corporate sector – the pay for these managers should be linked to performance.
.
I guarantee that as soon as managers’ salaries are dependent on the care that’s being delivered, we’ll suddenly start to see a lot more of them at the coalface and things will suddenly start to improve.

FREE SPEECH isn’t into conspiracy theories. We tend to feel that it’s possible for wildly opposing groups to have a convergence of interests. And if their convergence of interests is against your interests then you’ve got a fight on your hands.
However, we can understand where conspiracy theorists – especially in respect of free speech – are coming from. We understand their train of thought. For instance, what are we to make of the events listed below? Are they random events or, as conspiracy theorists would claim, is there some hidden hand manipulating events via different ‘patsies’?
Some attacks on free speech seem to be ridiculous. For instance, US News reports (1) that ‘A parent in Florida is citing profanity and violence in trying to get the local school to ban Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 — itself a cautionary tale on the banning of books.’
Other attacks are more serious. A recent RT report (2) noted that ‘A press freedom watchdog, Reporters Without Borders, has asked the Swiss Press Club to cancel a panel discussion on the “true agenda” of the controversial White Helmets group.’ This disturbs us as it sounds like some reporters are trying to stop other reporters reporting on something they disagree with! What happened to press freedom?!!
With all this in mind, Free Speech brings you part three of March Of The Thought Police, written by Dominic Sandbrook for the Daily Mail. This article follows directly on from part one http://nationalliberal.org/from-the-liberty-wall-%e2%80%93-free-speech-how-do-we-protect-it-march-of-the-thought-police-part-1 and part two http://nationalliberal.org/from-the-liberty-wall-%e2%80%93-free-speech-how-do-we-protect-it-march-of-the-thought-police-part-2
As usual, our sole intention is to stimulate mature debate on issues relating to free speech. It goes without saying that there are no official links between Free Speech, Dominic Sandbrook, the Daily Mail or any other news outlets referenced here.

In fact, destroying newspapers has become something of a habit for the modern liberal Left. During the election campaign, Left-wing activists eagerly tweeted pictures of themselves burning front pages of newspapers that criticised their hero, Jeremy Corbyn.Date: December 4, 2017
