From The Liberty Wall – Nations without States – What Must Be Done (13)

Check out our revamped Twitter feed: Twitter/Nations without States

WELCOME to issue 13 of What Must Be Done, the publically-available organising bulletin of Nations without States. NwS supporters are asked to read – and more importantly – act upon the instructions detailed below:

.
• TWITTER. Nations without States wishes to step up another gear in 2018.  We hope to stage – and support – more demonstrations and produce more publications than ever before.  As a starter, however, we’ve revamped our Twitter feed.  Our Twitter display name is now Nations without States and our Twitter username (or Twitter handle) is @nationswostates. We’ve also started to use the hashtag #SelfDetermination4All much more frequently.  This illustrates our belief that, when it comes to true self-determination, ‘none of us are free until all of us are free’.
.
With the above in mind, we feel that these changes better reflect the raisin d’etra of Nations without States.  We’d encourage anyone with a Twitter account to follow our Twitter feed – and don’t forget to spread the word about both self-determination in general and Nations without States in particular!
.
• ZULUS. Nations without States would like to both publicise and promote more national striuglles.  In particular, we’d like to find out more about the Zulu people and their desire for a more secure homeland in an increasingly volatile and corrupt South Africa.  Therefore if anyone has contacts with Zulu people (and for practical reasons, someone preferably currently living in the British Isles) could they contact NwS via Facebook – https://www.facebook.com/groups/184919468292372/
– Twitter – @nationswostates – or e-mail – nationswstates@aol.com Do it today!

From The Liberty Wall – National Liberal Trade Unionists – Government Action Required To Save Carillion Jobs

The collapse of Carillion could see 43,000 out of work.

THE NLTU – National Liberal Trade Unionists – believes that the government must act immediately to stop thousands of workers being thrown onto the scrapheap in the wake of the collapse of Carillion.

Carillion, the construction and outsourcing firm, is based in Wolverhampton, in the West Midlands.  It employs 43,000 staff and is responsible for crucial services in schools, hospitals and prisons.  It collapsed under a debt of £900m and a £580m pensions deficit.

According to the Guardian ‘The company derives £1.7bn – about a third of its revenue – from public sector contracts and public private partnerships – https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2018/jan/13/private-public-sector-history-tangled-relationship These include providing school dinners, cleaning and catering at NHS hospitals, construction work on rail projects such as HS2 and maintaining 50,000 army base homes for the Ministry of Defence.’

Along with many trade unionists, the NLTU, believes that both Carillion and the government are to blame for the current situation – with the latter appearing to ignore three profit warnings and awarding contract after contract to the former.  We also join others in their call for a public investigation into the actions of Carillion – which is already being dubbed ‘reckless corporate irresponsibility’ – and the government alike.  A further public investigation into the whole issue of private finance contracts should also be held.

However, the NLTU believes that the most important thing that needs to happen (in the short-term) is for the government to immediately step in to stabilise the situation.

Carillion should be nationalised.  This would protect thousands of jobs and keep badly needed infracture projects going.  We cannot see the point in throwing some highly skilled workers onto the scrap heap.  Indeed, the NLTU feels that this policy is absolutely criminal.

Once jobs have been secured we can look at the various options available.  As Distributists, the NLTUs preference would be to create a series of workers co-operatives  – where owners work and workers own.  This would literally put the workforce in charge of their own destiny.

As we mentioned earlier, we can then look into who awarded contracts to Carillion – and why.  We must also question the whole role of PFI as we feel that a national bank should simply create the money required for infrastructure projects, such as building new health centres, hospitals and schools.  But before all that, immediate government action is required to save all 43,000 Carillion jobs.

From The Liberty Wall – National Liberal Trade Unionists – Put NHS Bosses’ Pay On The Line

FELLOW TRADE UNIONISTS who read our articles will know that the NLTU – National Liberal Trade Unionists – regularly reproduce and echo the views of Dr Max Pemberton. Dr Pemberton is a London-based NHS psychiatrist, journalist and writer.

.

Like Dr Pemberton, the NLTU is totally opposed to the NHS being run as a business. Nor should it be seen as a cash cow for Big Pharma or various trans-national corporations. We believe that the NHS should remain a public service – and not run for private profit. Indeed, we wonder what sort of society could think about (yet alone tolerate) making money out of the illness and misery of other people.

.

With this in mind we reprint an another article by Dr Pemberton – which appeared in a copy of the Daily Mail in late August of last year. Once again, we’d like to stress that our sole intention is to stimulate mature debate and it goes without saying that there are no official links between the NLTU, Dr Pemberton or the Daily Mail.

.

Put NHS Bosses’ Pay On The Line

.

I DON’T believe I am alone in being outraged at news that health trusts are still paying eye-watering amounts of money to senior managers.

.

Latest figures show that some temporary managers brought in to try to save failing clinical commissioning groups are on rates equal to £200,000 a year – and some are on more than £300,000.  What on earth is gong on?

.

Despite government ministers saying they will clamp down on this kind of largess, the NHS claims it needs to pay these kinds of wages to be competitive and attract the best candidates.

.

Rubbish.  Most of these managers that I have encountered are mediocre at best.

.

And the fact that out of 32 failing clinical commissioning groups that hired them, just three are deemed to be no longer failing, suggests they aren’t worth the money.

.

I don’t agree with the NHS being run like a business, but this is the way it seems to be going.  It therefore seems to make sense to me that – just as happens in the corporate sector – the pay for these managers should be linked to performance.

.

I guarantee that as soon as managers’ salaries are dependent on the care that’s being delivered, we’ll suddenly start to see a lot more of them at the coalface and things will suddenly start to improve.
