DEMOCRATS must be wondering to what lengths elements of the Establishment will go to put the brakes on (or try to halt completely?) Brexit.

As the National Liberal Party has noted – http://nationalliberal.org/ will-of-the-people-vs-will-of-parliament – the High Court in London has previously ‘demand that Parliament rather than the Government/Executive must invoke Article 50’ which will allow us to leave the European Union.

(Earlier this month lawyers acting on behalf of Theresa May’s UK government were engaged in a Supreme Court battle over who can invoke Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty. Article 50 is the process whereby the UK can begin two years of formal Brexit talks. Eleven justices have heard the case – http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-38247937 They claim that they will not “overturn the result of the EU referendum” and it’s believed that their decision will be given in January.)

Prior to the EU Referendum in June, David Cameron – the then Prime Minister – promised that the will of the people would be implemented. As everyone knows the referendum was conducted on a UK wide basis and the majority of voters opted to quit the EU. In short, Brexit won the day.

It’s a fair bet that the vast majority of those who voted for Brexit believed that negotiations would have started immediately, but internal Tory politics (Cameron resigning and being replaced as Prime Minister by Theresa May) got in the way of that.

The London court case brought in November by the unlikely duo of Gina Miller – a partner in an investment management firm – and London-based Spanish hairdresser Deir Dos Santos follows a previous court case in Belfast.

Here another reasonably unlikely grouping – consisting of the Alliance Party, the Green Party, Sinn Féin and the Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP) – also went to court in a vain effort to block Brexit. (A separate case was also unsuccessfully brought by a well-known victims rights campaigner, Raymond McCord.)

This court case was odd to say the very least. Probably the most curious aspect was the sight of Sinn Féin and the SDLP going into a British court to try to force a country that they don’t really recognise (Ulster) to stay within the European Union! Why anyone – let alone so-called Irish republicans or nationalists – would want to surrender their nationhood to a supranational organisation is beyond us.

As our artwork – above – notes, we believe that the EU ‘is a rich man’s club for powerful corporate big business and banking elites. Their underlings – the politicians – are happy enough with the trappings of power.’ Liberal Future has always felt that, in Ulster, the Alliance Party and the Green Party could never challenge the capitalist system. Now it seems that the two largest Irish ‘socialist’ political parties have also surrendered to the forces of capitalism.

With this in mind, is it any wonder that some people believe that those who are bringing various court actions to halt Brexit are probably unwitting pawns in a much wider game? But more important than those individuals and groups is the identity of their backers. And even more important than this is the identity of those who are bankrolling the backers. Once we know the money source we’ll maybe discover the real reason why Brexit is being so bitterly opposed by elements of the Establishment.
