President Trump, The Death Penalty, The EU Referendum & International Women’s Day – What Do They All Have In Common?

President Donald Trump and International Women’s Day have both featured on our regular discussion forum.

PRESIDENT TRUMP, the Death Penalty, the EU Referendum & International Women’s Day – what do they all have in common?  Well nothing that we know of – except that they’ve all been hot topics of debate for National Liberal Party members and supporters!

.

Let us explain.  Regular readers will know the NLP hosts on-line debates relating to a varirty of subjects.  We do this for a couple of reasons:

.

• We’ve always been wary of both deliberate lies (now commonly known as ‘fake news’) and also what passes for ‘news’ these days – such as that based on gossip, rumour, speculation, allegation, innuendo, voyeurism and propaganda.

.

We also reject macho–posturing and gesture politics. National Liberals are therefore in favour of informed and reasoned debate. Here we concentrate on arguments, points of view and facts. We are not interested in personalities, prejudice or promoting self-interest.

.

• At the very heart of National Liberalism is the desire for self-determination.  The three principle strands of self-determination are national, political and economic.  Political self-determination seeks to ensure that the collective will of the people is reflected in decision making.  One way to do this is via referendums, preferendums.  And these can only be held if we have the absolute right to free speech, free debate and free assembly.

.

That’s the theory out of the way.  Now we come to the practical.

.

The best way to take part in our many debates is to wait until they appear on our Facebook page – https://www.facebook.com/groups/52739504313/ – and then have your say in the comments section below the article itself.

.

We hope to hold our 21st debate in the very near future.  In the meantime, readers can cast their eye over the previous twenty:

Harrow Voice Says … Support Local shops, Entrepreneurs, Small Businesses & The Self-Employed!

.
THE NATIONAL LIBERAL PARTY has spent some time and effort in building the infrastructure of an alternative mass media of news, views and entertainment.  Recently this has taken the form of several e-posters covering atreas as diverse as Devon, Essex, the Isle of Wight and Kent.  (In addition to these e-posters we have produced two issues of the Isle of Wight Voice and issue two of Kent Voice is just out.  We hope to produce the first issue of both Devon Voice and Essex Voice in the very near future).
.
The e-poster displayed above marks another development in that it relates to the outer London borough of Harrow.  The slogan Support Local Shops, Entrepreneurs, Small Businesses & The Self-Employed! will be very familiar to National Liberals – however, why have we used the flag of Middlesex as the background to the e-poster?
.
One of the main reasons is that Harrow actually started life as a municipal borough of Middlesex.  It became part of Greater London in 1965 when the capital was greatly expanded to take in other areas that used to belong to Essex, Hertfordshire, Kent and Surrey.
.
However, many National Liberals believe that London is far too large and that the principle of ‘Small Is Beautiful’ should be applied here.  This would mean that the capital should only consist of what’s known as its inner boroughs – Camden, Greenwich, Hackney, Hammersmith and Fulham, Islington, Kensington and Chelsea, Lambeth, Lewisham, Southwark, Tower Hamlets, Wandsworth and Westminster.
.
The outer London boroughs should then revert to their original counties – thus the current London Borough of Harrow would be returned to Middlesex.  Much of Middlesex itself has been incorporated into Greater London and it’s felt that this county should be resurrected.
.
It has a long and rich history – Middlesex gets its name from the Middle Saxons or Middel Seaxe who settled the area.  It became part of the Kingdom of Essex – land of the East Saxons – but was ceded to Mercia in the 9th century (825).  (Before English unification in 927 under King Æthelstan, Mercia was one of England’s seven main Kingdoms.  The others were Northumbria, East Anglia, Essex, Kent, Sussex and Wessex).
.
As well as supporting Harrow Voice’s message – that the borough’s local shops, entrepreneurs, small businesses & the self-employed should all be supported – we’d appreciate any thoughts concerning the idea of reducing the size of London by returning Harrow to Middlesex.  As usual, please post your comments when you see this article appear on the National Liberal Party’s Facebook page, the details of which can be found below.

Welsh Youth Say BreXit Now!
.
.
WALES voted for Brexit.  The exact figures from the EU Referendum of June 2016 show that 854,572 (52.5%) voters in Wales chose to leave the EU, compared with 772,347 (47.5%) supporting Remain.
.
A massive turnout (over 70%) saw the vast bulk of Wales’ council areas voting for Leave with a majority in 17 backing Brexit.  This meant that only five areas – Gwynedd, Cardiff, Ceredigion, the Vale of Glamorgan and Monmouthshire – voted for Remain.
.
Indeed, the vote in Wales – along with that in England – meant that the UK would leave the European Union.
.
Although the Welsh establishment wanted to remain in the EU, the electorate thought otherwise.  They voted with both their head and heart and opted for a future outside of what – in our view – is rapidly turning into an extremely centralist political and economic system.
.
The vision of Liberal Future (LF) is of free and independent European nations running their internal affairs in the way that suits them best.  This is the polar opposite of the EU which is rapidly merging into an anti-democratic United States of Europe.
.
Despite this urge for Welsh freedom (away from the EU) the Welsh Government spent over £84,000 on the Brexit case at the Supreme Court in London.  As this news report  http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-politics-38636508 notes, the Welsh Government were forced to deny that the case was a bid to block Brexit.
.
So much for the politicians respecting the will of the electorate!
.
Despite elements of the Welsh (and British) establishment trying their best to prevent Brexit, the latest news indicates that Prime Minister Theresa May has announced that the UK is still on course to leave the EU http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-38641208
.
It’s clear that the Remainers – or Remaniacs as some folks call them! – intend to frustrate this.  Who knows what they will try before or after Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty is served by the end of March?
.
Therefore, it is up to those who voted for Brexit to continue fighting for independence, freedom and democracy.
