Small Is Beautiful

HUNDREDS of residents in Milton Keynes – in Buckinghamshire – want to put the idea of ‘small is beautiful’ into practice. To do this they wish to break away from a giant parish to form their own parish and run it as a smaller rural community.

The residents live in around 400 homes – based in Woughton on the Green, Woughton Park and Passmore. At the moment they are part of the massive Woughton parish (which also includes Netherfield, Coffee Hall, Tinkers Bridge and Beanhill) but 98% of them wish to decentralize.

Explaining the idea behind the move, Small Is Beautiful campaigner John Baker noted:

“Those of us living in Woughton and Passmore get left out.

“We have a village green that’s hardly used for community events, a village hall that’s under-used and an allotment society that would like to be part of the community.

“We would like to run our own parish and our own affairs as a small rural community.

“The current parish boundary is too big. For us it is a case of small would be beautiful.”

To build their case for decentalisation, Small Is Beautiful campaigners knocked on every single door in Woughton on the Green, Woughton Park and Passmore. They discovered that 98 per cent of people wanted a separate parish.

A carefully-prepared a detailed submission was then drawn up and put before Milton Keynes Council Parish Council Review Group. Earlier this month the request was put to the vote at a full council meeting on Tuesday. It was flatly refused.

Small Is Beautiful campaigners have claimed that this refusal was due to Labour and Lib Dem internal politics.

However, they have refused to give up on their desire to form a smaller parish. They have vowed to keep on campaigning to promote the democratic wish of the residents. Watch this space!
